At the beginning of the National Socialist takeover, he withdrew. He visited Berlin in 1934 and met Emil Nolde there , who encouraged him to return to work. This was followed by a largely preserved correspondence with Nolde. Fritz Harnest had his first solo exhibition with chalk drawings in Berlin in 1934. From this time on he lived alternately in Hamburg, Berlin and Munich.

Fritz Harnest and Mutz Ellermann married in 1935 . She was a draftsman and later supported the family for many years. During this time, Fritz Harnest made some very colorful landscape and portrait paintings . In 1937 their son Joseph was born, one year later their son Ulf was born. After an unsuccessful attempt to settle in Hamburg, the family moved into an apartment in Übersee on Lake Chiemsee in 1938 . In the same year Fritz Harnest portrayed Emil Nolde's wife. From 1940 to 1945 Harnest worked as an interpreter in Moosburg . In 1946 he took part in the first post-war exhibitions of Bavarian Art of Today in Munich and Basel.

Harnest turned early to graphic work with woodcuts and abstraction . In 1952 the “ Bible woodcuts ” were created. During this time his pictures were exhibited in Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Austria, all parts of Germany and Ohio. 1959 began a friendship with Rupprecht Geiger . In 1959 he was a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel in the graphics department . In the same year he became a member of the New Munich Group through Werner Gilles .
