Chiemsee is a municipality-free area in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein .

The 77.86 km² area includes the water area of ​​the Chiemsee , with the exception of the Aiterbacher Winkel (Schafwaschener Bay) and the Irschener Winkel, as well as the artificially created small island of Schalch , which is the only Chiemsee island not part of the Chiemsee municipality . The municipality-free area borders in the west and on the three other Chiemsee islands that make up the municipality of Chiemsee, on the district of Rosenheim .
