history
The first written evidence for the name Wonneberg can be found in the year 1000 as uuagingariorum monte (on the Waginger Berg). The area of the small rural community in Rupertiwinkel belonged to the Archbishopric of Salzburg from 1275 to 1810 and then became part of Bavaria. In 1496, on behalf of the Salzburg Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach , the stately Gothic church, consecrated to St. Leonhard, was built. The paintings in the remarkable winged altar are a donation from the Laufener Schiffergilde. In 1818 today's political community was established. Wonneberg came in 1972 after the dissolution of the district running for district Traunstein . In 1978 it became part of an administrative community.

tradition
The Leonhardiritt is alive and well , an ancient pilgrimage on horseback to the late Gothic pilgrimage church of St. Leonhard am Wonneberg. Before Leonhardi pilgrimages were forbidden by the official church in 1881, parish pilgrimages from the surrounding communities sought protection and help from the cattle patron on the Wonneberg. The Leonhardi ride, which is celebrated on November 6th or on the Sunday before or after, is part of this religious tradition to this day.
