The Schalch is a tiny island in the Chiemsee and belongs to the community-free area Chiemsee in the district of Traunstein . It is located 66 m west of the Fraueninsel and 50 m from the nearest jetty. Its floor plan is a square with a side length of 4.7 m, the corners of which are aligned with the cardinal points . The area is 22 m².

The island was probably created artificially to mark a larger shoal , which extends around 40 m south and west and posed a danger to sailing boats. The bank is fortified with rows of masonry stones. According to other sources, it was supposed to serve as one of many bastions for a barrier chain surrounding the island during the Thirty Years' War. The island was planted by the artists' community of the Fraueninsel around 1935 with a six meter high willow to make it more visible for sailors. During a celebration, the artist community "baptized" the island of Sahara . The willow fell victim to a storm in the early 21st century and was replaced by a young willow.

Unlike the other Chiemsee islands, including the nearby Fraueninsel, the Schalch does not belong to the municipality of Chiemsee ( district of Rosenheim ), but like the lake to the municipality-free area of Chiemsee (district of Traunstein).
