Michael Henker (* 1948 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian historian, art historian and museum specialist who works in Germany.

Life

Michael Henker grew up in Werdenfelser Land and studied history, English and art history, as well as onomatology in Munich and graduated in 1982 with a doctorate. Since its re-establishment in 1983, he has been an employee or head of department at the House of Bavarian History in Augsburg, since 2000 as its deputy director. Together with Wolf-Armin von Reitzenstein , he led the state-wide research project "Recording the field names in Bavaria" (1988–2002). The results of the research project were published in the "Bayerisches Flurnamenbuch" series started in 1992.

He is the inventor of the Bavarian state exhibitions and supervised numerous large exhibition projects at home and abroad.

He is the author and editor of numerous individual publications, exhibition catalogs, compilations, media, series and periodicals on history, art and cultural history, as well as on all aspects of museology. Organizer of numerous specialist conferences and colloquia.

From 2008 until his retirement in 2013, he was the state curator and head of the state office for non-state museums in Bavaria . During this time he sponsored numerous museum projects, founded the Bavarian Voluntary Academy and played a key role in founding the Bavarian Museum Academy. From January 1st 2014 until the end of 2016 he was President of ICOM Germany . He was a member of the scientific advisory board of the Sudeten German Foundation and is head of the planning and development team of the Sudeten German Museum in Munich.

He is also chairman of the Wahnfried Board of Trustees of the Richard Wagner Museum Bayreuth and a member of other museum and exhibition bodies (Bärnau / Tachow History Park; Lundwig Erhard-Zentrum Fürth, Bayerischer Kunstgewerbeverein, Bayerischer Zentral-Bibelverein, and others). Since January 2018 he has also been chairman of the historical association Neuburg . In the same year he was awarded the culture prize of the city of Neuburg an der Donau.
