history

The historical association Neuburg goes back to a cabinet order from King Ludwig I , with which he called for the establishment of historical associations in the circles of the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1827 . In Neuburg, the historical branch association Neuburg an der Donau was established on July 30, 1833 . In January 1835 the first Collectaneenblatt appeared as a supplement to the Neuburger Wochenblatt. As the association's publication organ, it should publish contributions to local and regional history. The founding phase was shaped primarily by the businessman, art collector, local and prehistory researcher Joseph Benedikt Graßegger, who also became a great patron of the historical association through his descendants. Among other things, his daughter-in-law Amalie Graßegger gave the association four precious tapestries by Count Palatine Ottheinrich . In 1873 the first museum was set up in Neuburg so that the association's collections could be exhibited. In 1884 the name of the association was changed to Historischer Verein Neuburg an der Donau . During the time of National Socialism, the statutes were changed, influenced by Nazi ideology, and the name was changed to Heimatverein . In 1939 the Weveldhaus was bought as a future museum. After the end of the war, the association was reconstituted. It was given the name Historischer Verein (Heimatverein) in 1950. In 1950/1951 the local history museum was opened in the Weveldhaus. The club name was changed again to Heimatverein - Historischer Verein in 1970 , before the addition Heimatverein was completely omitted because of the problematic concept of Heimat since the Nazi era. In 1987, after many years of preparation, the Neuburg Castle Museum was opened. A large part of the exhibits are loans from the historical association. The local history museum was closed in 1985 and the Weveldhaus (now in municipal ownership) was extensively renovated. In 2005 the new city museum was opened there, which is supported by the historical association Neuburg to this day. The association currently has over 700 members. Matthias Schieber (1928–2001), chairman from 1980 to 2000, was an honorary citizen of the city of Neuburg an der Donau in recognition of his diverse cultural and local political activities. His successor as club chairman was Roland Thiele from 2000 to 2017.
