The Sudetendeutsche Foundation is a foundation under public law with legal capacity based in Munich. It was established by law with effect from August 1, 1970. It pursues charitable purposes, in particular looks after the Sudeten German cultural property , maintains it in the awareness of the displaced, the entire German population and abroad as a permanent testimony, takes on assets, uses and manages them in trust for its purposes, it also looks after facilities with a relationship to the Sudeten Germans Ethnic group (Art. 2 SudetStG).

"The Free State of Bavaria created the foundation's assets with a donation of 200,000 DM and the Sudeten German Landsmannschaft with 100,000 DM," declared the Bavarian State Minister Fritz Pirkl (CSU) on the Sudeten German Day in 1972 in Stuttgart. In 1974, due to the law for the processing of the assets of credit institutions, insurance companies and building societies under special administration ( Federal Law Gazette 1972 I p. 465 ) , country team facilities received federal funds amounting to 29 million DM. These funds come from credit institutions in the east and Sudeten German areas; the Sudeten German Foundation received the largest single amount of this with DM 12 million.

In 1984 the chairman of the foundation and member of the Bundestag Fritz Wittmann (CSU) stated : “In the past ten years, around 23 million DM have flowed into the Sudeten German foundation from the western assets of Sudeten German institutes.” The foundation's capital was increased in the early 1990s from Free State of Bavaria increased by a donation of 5 million DM in order to improve the financing of the increased tasks of the Sudeten German ethnic group after the political change of 1989. In particular, cultural projects and Sudeten German and German-Czech encounters between the Sudeten Germans are supported from the foundation's income. Funding is mainly project-related.
