The Oestertalsperre is located in the Märkisches Kreis , North Rhine-Westphalia , north of the ridge of the Ebbegebirge in the area of the town of Plettenberg . It has a gravity dam made of quarry stone with a wall height of 36 meters with a crown width of 4.5 meters and a crown length of 231 meters. The storage capacity is 3.1 million m³ and the surface area is 24.5 hectares.
history
The dam was built from 1904–1906 by the specially founded Oestertalsperren cooperative based on a design by the renowned civil engineer and dam expert Otto Intze (professor at the Technical University of Aachen ) under the supervision of government master builder Rudolf Schäfer. After several construction companies commissioned with the execution had gone bankrupt , the construction company Boswau & Knauer took over the construction of the dam, which was put into operation on July 31, 1907.
description
The reason for the construction of the dam was the regulation of the Oesterbach , as it played an important role in the region's economic development. When the drought was severe, the hydropower-operated factories on the Oesterbach often got into serious embarrassment. If, on the other hand, large masses of water fell into the valley in autumn or spring, the factory owners feared for their systems.
The Oesterbach is dammed ; the plant belongs to the Oesterwasserverband. Today it is used to regulate the water level in the Ruhr and to remove process water for some companies based in Plettenberg, as well as a recreational area. A campsite and a restaurant are available. The 2.6 km long circular route is only partially recommended for walks, as it runs along the edge of the country road for about half of the length. Instead of taking the way back along the country road, you can also choose a parallel forest path, which then no longer offers a view of the dam.
