Westerbuchberg

Westerbuchberg is a hamlet in the Upper Bavarian district of Traunstein , south of Übersee and belongs to the municipality of Übersee.

The Westerbuchberg counts with 603  m above sea level. NHN to the highest elevations in the valley of the Tiroler Achen. Along with the Osterbuchberg, the Herrenberg in Prien and the Herreninsel, it was an island in the early original Chiemsee . Since these elevations are made of harder molasse rock , they were not abraded by the glaciers of the Ice Age, but remained. This can be seen particularly well on the south side of the Chiemsee on the Wester- and Osterbuchberg: While the rest of the base of the original Chiemsee is flat and boggy up to the mountains, these two elevations protrude steeply from the plain.

Choir room with altar cross

At the western end of the hamlet is one of the oldest churches in southern Chiemgau: the Catholic branch church St. Peter and Paul, originally Romanesque (around 1200), rebuilt in Gothic style after 1400. The church is characterized by old frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries. a. an interesting depiction of the Last Judgment on the north side of the choir room. A special feature is the painted Gothic emergency responders -Altar on the east wall of the side vessel (see Altarretabel (Westerbuchberg) ). In the aisle there are console statues of the church patrons Peter and Paul and a Madonna and Child . The choir is dominated by the altar cross (around 1520).
