William Quindt (born October 22, 1898 in Hildesheim , † December 29, 1969 in Marquartstein , Traunstein district ) was a German journalist and writer who became known in the genre of adventure novels and animal stories.

Life

William Quindt, who came from a peasant family, lost his parents at an early age and from the age of 15 he struggled with various professions. Eventually he became a journalist. But he also gave up this activity to - following his "animal longing" - to become press officer at large circus companies such as Sarrasani , Busch and others, with whom he subsequently toured all of Europe . Further trips also brought him to Africa and India .

His experiences with exotic animals and locations provided him with plenty of material for animal stories and adventure novels, which he began to publish from 1933 , beginning with the Indian novel The Tiger Akbar . Most of his books quickly became bestsellers , with numerous editions and translated into several languages. In 1950/51, a film version of The Tiger Akbar was made under the direction of Harry Piel , for which Quindt wrote the script. In general, however, Quindt was unable to match his earlier successes with his works that were created after the Second World War , including Götter und Gaukler (1954). However, many of these older works remained to this day continuously available, most notably road of elephants (1939), which now has the reputation of an African classic, especially since Quindt is very early critical of the Ivory - poaching dealt and forcefully to protect the elephant entered. For Walt Disney , he also wrote the novelization to the documentary White Wilderness ( White Wilderness ), which was published 1960th It was to be his last work.
