Today's Hörpolding – Traunreut railway line goes back to the connecting line of the St. Georgen Army Ammunition Plant , the construction of which began in 1938 in preparation for the Second World War . The ammunition factory and the associated connecting railway went into operation in 1942.

After the war, the area of the dismantled ammunition factory was used as accommodation and living space for displaced persons from eastern Germany and Czechoslovakia , from which the future town of Traunreut emerged. The factories of today's BSH Hausgeräte and Heidenhain have settled in the remaining production halls , which still ensure a constant volume of goods traffic.

From September 28, 1952 to September 27, 1963, passenger trains of the Deutsche Bundesbahn ran on the former connecting line, which in Hörpolding each had a connection to the trains on the Traunstein – Garching line. After that, on July 21, 2001, at the town festival in Traunstein, a passenger train traveled the route again.

As part of the reactivation of the Hörpolding - Traunreut route, since the timetable change on December 10, 2006, 15 trains per day and 10 trains per day connect Traunreut with Traunstein via Hörpolding. Before that, the line was extensively modernized for 5 million euros, including a. Traunreut train station received a barrier-free platform.

Since the timetable change in December 2019, trains have been running every hour from Traunstein to Hörpolding, then alternately every two hours to Traunreut and Garching. Shuttle buses run every hour on the Traunreut – Traunstein route.
