On June 20, 2020 shortly before 19:00 intervened man with a knife at people who met in a park in Forbury Gardens. Three people died from their wounds and three others were seriously injured. A 25-year-old Libyan man was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of murder and subsequently under the Terrorism Act 2000 .

procedure

Just before 7:00 p.m. on June 20, 2020, a man attacked two groups of people who were meeting in Forbury Gardens, a public park in central Reading about 60 km west of London , with a knife that it estimated was one Witness was at least 13 cm long. According to one report, the victims were stabbed in the neck, under the arms and in the eyes. According to witness statements, the knife attack was "completely random". At 6:56 p.m. local time, Thames Valley Police officers entered the park.

A suspect with a knife was caught by police officers on Friar Street near the park five minutes after the first 911 call. The man was initially arrested on suspicion of murder and arrested again while in custody under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

The knife attack was filmed by several passers-by with their smartphones; police asked not to show their footage on social media.

Injured

There were three dead and three seriously injured in the attack. The air rescue were deployed on the ground and the South Central Ambulance Service sent its Hazardous Area Response Team . Of the injured, two were admitted to the emergency room at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading. Another injured person was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

The three men killed were mutual friends. They were a 36-year-old teacher at the Holt School in Wokingham , a 39-year-old American citizen who worked for a pharmaceutical company and had lived in the UK for 15 years, and a 49-year-old senior scientist with the Johnson Matthey chemicals company .

The arrested 25-year-old Khairi S. is said to be a Libyan citizen . He came to the UK from Libya in 2012 and initially lived in Manchester . The suspect was convicted of fifteen criminal offenses six times between 2015 and 2019. Citing a security source, Reuters reported that he had been noticed by the British domestic intelligence agency Security Service as early as 2019 because he wanted to travel for extremist purposes and that he was being investigated on jihadist concerns. He was released from prison 17 days prior to the attack after being convicted of possession of a blade and assault. The Guardian reported that intelligence agencies believed the suspect had mental health problems. Sky News also reported that he lived in an apartment in Reading and was a refugee .

Investigations

The Thames Valley Police's first statements on the evening of the knife attack stated that the crime was “not currently being treated as a terrorist incident ” and that investigators “remain open about motivation”, despite the fact that counterterrorism officers were deployed. The next morning, the Southeast anti-terrorism police declared that the attacks were "a terrorist incident". With the support of the Security Service, she took command of the knife attack from the local police. The police discussed possible charges with prosecutor's attorneys.

Legal proceedings

On June 29, 2020, the suspect appeared by video link in Westminster Magistrates' Court on three counts of murder and attempted murder. According to the prosecutor , the defendant shouted " Allahu akbar " .

He was in custody arrested and appeared by video link from prison Belmarsh in London at the Old Bailey . The next hearing was scheduled for July 10th at the Old Bailey.

Reactions

Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed his condolences and thanked emergency services for responding to the incident. The following morning, June 21, Johnson met with senior ministers, police and security officials at 10 Downing Street to learn about the events. Interior Minister Priti Patel and the chairman of the Labor Party , Keir Starmer , both expressed concerns about the knife attack.

The Reading Borough Council chairman said he was "shocked and appalled" by the "terrible and pointless attack," expressed condolences and thanked emergency services for their response. The city council issued a statement saying that "the thoughts and prayers are with the families of the three people who have lost their lives and those who are still badly injured," and announced that their flag would be removed will blow at half mast for that day .
