The Center for Environment and Culture Benediktbeuern (ZUK) is a non-profit organization for environmental and nature protection as well as an education, conference and guest house.

history

The ZUK, located in the Maierhof of the Benediktbeuern Monastery , was founded in 1988 on the initiative of the Salesians of Don Bosco . One of the co-founders was Herbert Bihlmayer SDB, who was chairman of the sponsoring association until 2011. Ottmar Schoch SDB was the coordinator from 1997 to 2017 .

goals and tasks

One of the goals of the ZUK is to preserve the natural basis of life and the cultural heritage. Achieving appreciation and commitment for life in all its diversity is a primary task for the center. Another goal of the ZUK is education for sustainable development out of Christian responsibility for creation. Through the founding and co-sponsorship, the religious community wants to make a contribution to the responsibility for creation. The motto of the Benediktbeuern monastery is youth, creation, education - today for tomorrow .

Facilities

The ZUK maintains several facilities to implement its goals and tasks.

Maierhof

The environmental youth education center offers offers for school classes, youth groups and families, from natural history tours to multi-day environmental weeks to offers with a religious background, such as company weekends . In addition to the UJB, there are two other educational institutions, the academy and adult education, with adult education offering open courses on ZUK topics, while the academy offers advanced training for teachers and educators. The academy also organizes symposia on energy and natural history topics. The Maierhof also houses an environmental library, a museum on the Maierhof and the Loisach-Kochelsee moors , a guest house, a conference area and a culture office. In addition to the cultural program, the latter also organizes the open-air concerts in the Maierhof.

Energy pavilion

The energy pavilion was built in 2004 next to the energy center of the monastery and houses an energy and geological workshop, both of which are used by the educational institutions, the nature conservation and landscape maintenance office, which also takes care of the Loisach-Kochelsee-Moore area , and a self-catering area.

Nature stations

The ZUK maintains two bird watching stations in the moor. The Moosmühle bird watching station is set up as a winter station where the birds are fed in an artificially created biotope. In the winter months, passers-by are informed by ornithologists at regular open events . The Fuchsbichlstadl bird watching station is located on a lapwing biotope . This biotope is designed for meadow breeders and migratory birds resting in front of the Alps. In addition, the ZUK maintains a bog trail , a barefoot path , a sound path , a woodland path Klosterland and experience habitats for environmental education. The Kohlstattalm on the Benediktenwand and the Loisachstadl in the moor have been expanded for groups and events .
