MonoDevelop is an integrated development environment that is being developed as part of the Mono project . MonoDevelop was created at the end of 2003 through an effort by some Mono developers to port the SharpDevelop development environment to Mono and GTK # .

history

From version 0.10 MonoDevelop has an integrated GUI designer for the GTK # and since 0.12 ASP.NET support.

From version 1.0 Beta 2, MonoDevelop is part of the Mono project and no longer depends on SharpDevelop. It is also integrated into the Gnome desktop environment . The MonoDevelop program interface is multilingual.

With version 2, the project management was converted to the MSBuild format and a new text editor, e.g. B. Code folding supported, integrated. There were also improvements in the editor for ASP.NET and, for the first time, an integrated debugger .

One goal of version 2.2, released on December 15, 2009, was to better integrate it into the macOS and Windows operating systems . In addition, the previous license was updated from the GPL to the LGPLv2 license and expanded with the MIT / X11 .

From version 2.6, which was published on September 7, 2011, it is possible to create .NET 4.0 projects.

Version 4.0.0 was released on February 20, 2013, Version 5.0 on May 27, 2014 and Version 6.0 on February 18, 2016.

Mono has been actively developed by a mono developer community. This was temporarily under the care of Ximian (taken over in 2003 by Novell ), later by Xamarin , which was taken over by Microsoft in 2016 .

After taking over the publisher Xamarin , Microsoft 2016 offered the previously proprietary MonoDevelop-based Xamarin Studio for Windows and Mac free of charge. In May 2017, version 6.3 of Xamarin Studio was called the last version and it was recommended that developers switch to Visual Studio 2017 (with Xamarin Tools ) or Visual Studio for Mac .

The Linux variant was further developed in 2018. Most recently, tools for .NET Core and ASP.NET Core were integrated (released in May 2018 as version 7.5). At the moment (January 2020) the last downloadable Linux version is 7.6.9.22 from October 2018. A version "7.8.4 (build 2)" (from July 2019) is currently being installed via the repository. However, there is no support for .NET Core 3.0 or later. It is also unclear whether / how the debugger for .NET Core should work, possibly only via a plugin.

Programming languages

MonoDevelop supports several programming languages, including C # , F # , Visual Basic .NET , Java , Vala and Boo . With version 1.0, support for C ++ and C was added.
