The monastery church St. Benedikt (also colloquially known as the basilica of St. Benedict and the monastery basilica ) is the former abbey church and current Catholic parish church in Benediktbeuern . The building is one of the first significant baroque churches in the countryside in Upper Bavaria and part of the Benediktbeuern monastery . In 1972 the church was elevated to a minor basilica .

history

The basilica was built in the 17th century under the abbot Plazidus Mayr as a monastery church of the Benedictine abbey Benediktbeuern in the architectural style of the Italian early baroque. The facade still shows features of the late renaissance . Under the direction of Caspar Feichtmayr , the towers and the sacristy were built from 1672 to 1681 , then the rest of the church was built from 1681 to 1686, the nave of which is 18 meters high and 26 meters wide.

St. Benedikt was a monastery church until secularization in 1803 and is now the parish church of the parish of Benediktbeuern. The church was renovated from 1962 to 1973 due to the risk of collapse.

Pope Paul VI elevated the monastery church to a minor basilica on May 29, 1972 with the apostolic letter Quantopere sint .

The evangelical funeral service for Harry Valérien took place in the church in 2012 .

The interior is extensively decorated with stucco . The vault pictures come from Hans Georg Asam and are considered to be the earliest frescoes of old Bavarian baroque art.

The main altar picture (1788) and the pictures of the foremost side altars are works by Martin Knoller . The stucco sculpture to the left of the altarpiece shows St. Boniface , co-founder of Benediktbeuern, the sculpture on the right Ulrich von Augsburg . On the new altar above the choir steps, which was built in 1973, the arm reliquary of St. Benedict , created in 1794 by the Munich goldsmith Peter Streissel, is exhibited. Behind the high altar, connected to the nave through a window, is the psallier choir, including the sacristy.

In 1753, the rococo chapel was built in honor of St. Anastasia of Sirmium at the northeast corner of the church.

organ

The organ

The large organ was built between 1682 and 1686 by the Salzburg master Christoph Egedacher . In 1770 it was expanded by Andreas Jäger and got a new brochure. The work with 33 registers on two manuals and pedal has been preserved. The playing and stop actions are mechanical. In 1967 the instrument was restored by Orgelbau Sandtner , and the positive registers were also reconstructed.
