The Catholic parish and pilgrimage church of Sankt Leonhard im Forst in Wessobrunn , a community in the Pfaffenwinkel in the Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau , was built from 1726 to 1735 by the Wessobrunn Monastery in the Rococo style , including the tower of the Gothic predecessor complex. The church received its furnishings until 1771. It was renovated in 1985 (inside) and 1995 (outside). It is one of the protected architectural monuments (No. D-1-90-158-42).

history

The church is located in the former monastery village of Sankt Leonhard, southeast of the current location of Wessobrunn, in the forest of the Wessobrunn monastery, where some of the plasterers from the Wessobrunn school were also based. Only the tower of a Gothic complex has been preserved, which was expanded to include the octagon and the onion at the end of the 17th century . The rebuilding of the church from 1725 is attributed to Joseph Schmuzer .

architecture

The church is a hall church . It has a retracted choir that is closed in a semicircle. The sacristy is located in the northern corner of the choir . The nave is vaulted by a barrel arched barrel. Stitch caps are supported by coupled pilasters that are closed off by Corinthian capitals . There is a double gallery in the choir, the arcades open between pillars. In the west, a two-storey gallery was built in the 19th century .

Piece

The stucco in the choir around 1756 and in the nave around 1769 was made by Tassilo Zöpf , which is described as very high quality .

The ceiling fresco in the choir was executed in 1756 by Johann Martin Heigl , a student of Johann Baptist Zimmermann . It depicts St. Leonhard as intercessor before the Holy Trinity. The ceiling paintings in the nave are by Matthäus Günther , they are labeled and signed with the year 1769. Various scenes from the Leonhard legend are shown , in the middle Mary with allegories of the divine virtues.

Furnishing

The three altars (made of stucco marble ) are also attributed to Thassilo Zöpf , her sculptures to Thomas Schaidhauf (1735 to 1807) and Franz Xaver Schmädl . The miraculous image of St. Leonhard from around 1500 is in the main altar; to the side the holy Donatus of Münstereifel and Sebastian are arranged. The north side altar was created around 1615/19; it is attributed to Bartholomäus Steinle and shows the holy Sylvester and the holy Elisabeth . The southern side altar contains depictions of St. Hilaria, Afra and a sculpture of St. Ulrich .
