Pilgrimage Church of Maria Vespers

Maria Vesperbild is a district of the municipality Ziemetshausen in the district of Günzburg ( Swabia , Bavaria ), named after the pilgrimage church of the same name . The pilgrimage site of Maria Vesperbild is located approx. 1 km southeast of Ziemetshausen on the B 300 . Every year 400,000 to 500,000 people make a pilgrimage to the image of Our Lady of Sorrows (Vespers image = Pietà ).

In 1650 a field chapel was built on the way from Ziemetshausen to Langenneufnach as thanks for the end of the Thirty Years' War . In 1673 the chapel was enlarged and in 1725 the first pilgrimage church was built. In 1754 a new pilgrimage church was built, which was consecrated in 1756. In 1960 the altar of grace and in 1965 the side altars were erected.

On February 22, 1969, founded Augsburg Bishop Josef Stimpfle that required by the Sanctuary Engelwerk nationals "priestly community Maria Pieta".

Maria Vesperbild's pilgrimage director was Prelate Wilhelm Imkamp for 30 years ; His successor has been the previous Dean of Kaufbeuren, Erwin Reichart, since January 2018.

Fatima grotto

From the Sanctuary a leading crossroads through a light Buchenwald to Fatima - Cave (north of Castle Seyfriedsberg ). Huge votive candles from all over the world, donated by pilgrims, burn around the Fatima Madonna . There are well over 1000  votive tablets of answers to prayer.

criticism

Erwin Reichart, the pilgrimage director of Maria Vesperbild, invited in October 2018 to a discussion on the subject of " Abuse in the Church ". There he said “The Church cannot sin” and blamed the sexual abuse cases in the Roman Catholic Church of social liberalization . The diocese of Augsburg distanced itself from these statements.
