Hoyt Scoggins
William Hoyt Scoggins (born January 9, 1926 in Lafayette , Georgia ) is an American rockabilly and gospel singer.
Life
Childhood and youth
Contrary to other claims, Hoyt Scoggins was born in Georgia in 1926; for example, Adam Komorowski gave 1927 as the year of birth. Scoggins, whose father Murphy Scoggins was a professional fiddler , learned to play the guitar and mandolin when he was twelve .
Career
Scoggins made his first radio appearances at the age of 17 on WGTA in Summerville, Georgia. At about the same time he began composing his own songs. In 1952 he began to appear on WROM in Rome, Georgia, and took over the leadership of the house band of the Saturday Night Jamboree , the Saturday Night Jamboree Boys , in which Norman Blake also played.
In 1954 he began to record for Starday Records . His first record consisted of two self-written gospel songs, followed by a single on the Coosa label, which was produced as part of the Starday Package Deal . This was followed by more singles for Starday until 1960, which were released alternately on the regular label or package deal labels. In 1955 Scoggins recorded his first small hit Trudy , followed in 1956 by Tennessee Rock , his most famous song to date. This track was Scoggins' only rockabilly song.
After 1956, Scoggins concentrated on gospel again and released two EPs on Starday by 1960. Scoggins also ran his own label, Scoggins Records. His piece The Pathway Is Not Crowded was recorded by the Oak Ridge Quartet and the Lewis Family , among others , and Scoggins has appeared with stars such as Tex Ritter , Roy Rogers , Eddy Arnold , Hank Williams , Patsy Cline and others. However, he gave up his career as a musician for the profession of pastor, which he carried out for 40 years until his retirement.
Hoyt Scoggins continues to perform regularly in Rome, Georgia. He was inducted into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 2009 .
