Götterdämmerung is a tribute album to the Berlin punk rock band Die Ärzte , which was created and published in 1997 on the initiative of the Doctors ' Fan Club . It appeared on the Intercord music label and represents a broad cross-section of the doctors' musical oeuvre.
History of origin
The idea behind it was to "make a tribute album, but this time with real bands". As early as 1995 there was an attempt organized by the “Spackenfront” fan club to record a tribute album. For this purpose, the latter asked its members to cover songs by the doctors . This resulted in the cassette sampler Die Ärzte fans shred punk rock pearls , of which around 100 were produced.
In autumn 1996 the then Fanklubleiter Roman Hottgenroth came the idea to produce a serious continuation of what together with Markus Karg, editor of fanzine The Spacken and author of the official biography of the doctors, an oversized guinea pig eating on the ground , in the Act was implemented.
Originally, the sampler was only supposed to appear in a small edition of 1,000 copies and be reserved for fan club members. Even with the inquiries from Karg and Hottgenroth, it was more about having fun than about commercial aspects, as neither fees nor studio costs could have been borne by the fan club. Therefore, at the beginning only bands were asked who would in all likelihood take part voluntarily, as they had already performed in the doctor's program, for example. The first bands that were asked were therefore WIZO , the terror group , Prollhead and The Chainsaw Hollies , of which Atze Ludwig, one of Bela B's closest friends , was a member.
When it became known that this project would attract bigger circles than initially assumed, the independent label Gringo Records , founded by Uwe Hoffmann , medical merchandiser and Deutschrock GmbH founder Jens “Yentz” Köhler and Farin Urlaub , stepped in and took over the financing . Gringo, in turn, got a sales deal with Intercord.
The album was released in October 1997. This was celebrated in the " Große Freiheit " in Hamburg , where many of the bands involved, partly supported by Bela B. and Rod , performed.
The cover
On the cover of the album, the members of the doctors can be seen, only clad in loincloths and crucified, which, in addition to the title, also gave the cover a religious connotation. The photo was taken near Hildesheim and was shot by Olaf Heine .
The booklet only consists of three close-ups of the “gods” wearing crowns of thorns as well as information about the covered tracks, recording locations, participating artists and producers as well as the authors of the “original songs”.
