Welder at work

Welder or universal welder (Austria) is a job title for a job in metal processing. Welders assemble or connect system and construction components using different welding processes . The materials to be connected are metals (e.g. steel, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, etc.) but also certain types of plastic, such as polymers .

job profile

During the Second World War, women were often employed in what was then a typical male job

Welders are mainly used in metal processing companies, such as locksmiths or welding shops. Important employers are also machine, tool and vehicle manufacturers or supply engineering companies. According to the respective work order, they first produce templates. You select the welding processes that are most favorable for the material (such as gas melting , electric or plastic welding ) and cutting tools and work with manual or automatic welding machines. Other possible processes are riveting , gluing and soldering of materials. Finally, welders subject the parts to a quality control and check them for cracks and material defects. Most of the time they work during pre-assembly in factory buildings (e.g. metal construction) or during final assembly on construction sites.

In Central and Western Europe there has long been a shortage of trained welders because apprenticeships are relatively rare.

education

Germany

From 1996 to 2004 welding technology was a specialist area in the construction technology apprenticeship. With the change in the training regulations in 2004, the departments were abolished in order to achieve greater flexibility in the metal professions. Today it depends on the training company to what extent welding technology is learned.

Currently, courses to become a certified welder are offered as basic and advanced training . In many vocational training courses, these exams are prescribed in the general training plan. This training is based on the guidelines of the German Association for Welding and Allied Processes. V. (DVS) and the conclusion is based on international standards. The course organizers are mostly welding technology teaching and research institutes , vocational schools and authorized public and private organizations. The duration of the training depends on the previous technical knowledge, the organization of the course (full-time, part-time) or the desired qualification (welding authorization). From a purely legal point of view, there is no specific school education. In addition to seam testing, theory, accident prevention and drawing reading are also tested. Those who fail the theoretical part of the exam are only allowed to weld under supervision. The seam tests are valid for two years and must be confirmed by the welding supervisor every six months. Successful applicants have at least a secondary school diploma or, ideally, have already completed other apprenticeships in the metal industry.

Austria

In Austria, the term universal welder is common. However, the training was reformed and renamed on June 1, 2011. The universal welder apprenticeship has merged into the metal technology module. Metal technician apprentices can choose the welding technology main module in the new modular apprenticeship . They are trained for three and a half or four years in the dual system at vocational schools and relevant training companies and conclude with the final apprenticeship examination. The training content corresponds to the activities of the job description. The prerequisite for starting is the completion of the nine years of compulsory schooling, but applicants usually have a degree from Hauptschule and / or Polytechnische Schule .

further education

International

The IIW diplomas authorize welding supervision in four stages and, like an academic degree, are valid for life worldwide. With a certification that is valid for three years, further training and activity as a welding supervisor is certified for the first time three years after the patent has been granted in accordance with international law.

  • CERTIFIED INTERNATIONAL WELDING SPECIALIST
  • CERTIFIED INTERNATIONAL WELDING TECHNOLOGIST
  • CERTIFIED INTERNATIONAL WELDING ENGINEER

Germany

After three years of practical work, a welder can gain further qualifications as a DVS master welding technician and thus take on welding supervisory functions in certain areas of production. Further training to become a welding specialist is then possible. For master welders and welding specialists, the additional test technology module gives them the opportunity to qualify as welding quality inspectors and to work in production monitoring. It is possible for welding specialists with appropriate specialist pedagogical knowledge to become a welding instructor at one of the educational institutions approved by DVS. Official technical vocational school teachers also require qualifications in certain professions.

Austria

As in Germany, the independent performance of most welding work is tied to examinations that have been passed ( ÖNORM examinations). Learning about new / additional welding processes is particularly important for universal welders / welding technicians. At the WIFI, you can take the globally valid examination for welding supervision according to international law. Those who do not have any qualifications will be admitted to a preliminary course. This is a prerequisite for the production of safety-relevant weld seams. The independent professional activity is possible for universal welder in regulated trade of locksmith or blacksmith. For only internal activities, the EWF guideline EWF-652r3-14 / SV-00EWCP with the successfully passed examinations for welding coordinators, the ÖNORM EN 1090-2 according to international law in Austria is fulfilled. For higher qualifications at colleges, technical colleges and universities, you usually need the vocational matura (vocational matriculation examination), which is made up of the final apprenticeship examination and four other exams.
