from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Institute of Welding (IIW) is an international technical-scientific association for welding, soldering and related technologies. It is made up of the national welding associations from all over the world. The institute was founded in 1948 by 13 national societies. By 2011 the membership had grown to 53 national welding societies. This includes in Germany: DVS - German Welding and related methods of the Standards Committee Welding and Welding Training and Research Institute , the Institut de Soudure in France, the National Structural Integrity Research Center , UK and The Welding Institute , England , or the Central Welding Authority , Austria.

The general assembly of the national societies defines the policy of the IIW and elects its president and a board of directors. One of its first presidents was Howard Biers (1954–1957). A permanent secretariat deals with regular day-to-day activities and maintains contact with other international organizations.

The IIW has a number of specialist committees, each of which deals scientifically and technologically with a relatively broad topic from the field of welding and joining technology. Some technical committees have technical sub-commissions, each dealing with a specific aspect. In cooperation with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) , the IIW participates in the preparation of standards in the Technical Committee TC44 (welding and related processes). A total of 21 ISO standards and updates have been published so far under the direct responsibility of the IIW.

The IIW publishes the bi-monthly international technical and scientific journal Welding in the World.
