Howard Biers

Howard William Richard Biers (born December 3, 1904 in New York City , † March 15, 1967 there ) was an American metallurgist .

Life

Biers, son of Arthur Biers and his wife Anne Eleanor b. Zoll, studied metallurgy at the University of Virginia ( Bachelor of Science 1925) and then at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( Master of Science 1927). He then worked as a research metallurgist at Union Carbide & Carbon Research Laboratories, Inc. in New York City. In 1930 he was sent to Paris , Brussels and London to study the European steel industry .

After the start of the Second World War , Biers became an advisor to the Department for Munitions and Supply of the Canadian government in 1940 . He was also the Canadian Chairman of the Ferro Alloy Committee of the War Production Board and Canada's Representative in the Joint United States - United Kingdom Canadian Metallurgical Mission .

In 1948 Biers returned to Union Carbide as a consultant. 1954 doctorate which he University of Mining Leoben for Doctor Rerum montanarum . In 1955 he became the sales director of the ore division and in 1959 a senior advisor to Union Carbide.

In 1963 Biers opened his own consulting office. He was President of the International Institute of Welding (1954–1957), Honorary Vice President of the Iron and Steel Institute in London, US delegate to the Commission Permanente International de l'Acétylène in Paris and honorary member of many other international research institutions and specialist societies. Since 1934 he has been a member of the Association of German Ironworkers (VDEh) , which made him an honorary foreign member in 1955. Since 1962 he has looked after the scholarship holders of the VDEh anniversary donation.

Biers died returning from his New York City office to his Connecticut country estate . He was married to Constance Lucie Mary Herzog (since 1937) and had a son: William Richard (* 1938).
