history

The "Technical Association for Metallurgy", founded in November 1860, joined the Association of German Engineers in November 1861 as a branch . This connection was terminated in 1880. On July 1, 1881, the first edition of the association magazine Stahl und Eisen appeared , which is still published today.

From 1880 to 2002 the name of the association was "Association of German Ironworkers (VDEh)", in 2003 the name was changed to "Steel Institute VDEh" - the abbreviation VDEh was adopted as part of the name. The association has around 6,600 members, plus around 160 supporting and cooperative member companies.

Friedrich Springorum , who has been in office since 1905, modernized the VDEh on an organizational and technical level. The activities of the two long-term managing directors Emil Schrödter and Otto Petersen were of great importance for the association's external impact. Springorum's successor was Albert Vögler († April 14, 1945) in 1917 . In 1936 Fritz Springorum took over the chairmanship, which he gave up in 1939 due to illness. Eduard Herzog, CEO of August Thyssen-Hütte since July 1945, became chairman of the VDEh in 1946.

The association promotes the further development of steel technology and the material steel through the technical, technical-scientific and scientific cooperation of engineers . He maintains his own educational offers and performs tasks in the area of advice and assessment and representation of interests by participating in international bodies.

The association participates in the standardization work nationally through cooperation in DIN e. V. , but also by developing a separate series of technical rules, which are identified with the abbreviation "SEB". Over 270 SEB standards have appeared. Participation in DIN takes place through the " Iron and Steel Standards Committee (FES)" founded in 1947 , whose office is organized and financially supported by the association. The FES also works with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Iron and Steel Standardization (ECISS).

The steel institute publishes its own specialist publications, operates an extensive archive of images and films, and participates in research into the history of technology . It maintains the Betriebsforschungsinstitut (BFI) (founded in 1968 with founding director Karl Heinz Mommertz , non-profit GmbH since 1971). and is a partner of the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research GmbH (MPIE) together with the co-partner Max Planck Society .
