Zekai Aksakallı

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zekai Aksakallı (* 1962 in Erzurum ) is a lieutenant general in the Turkish armed forces . Between 2013 and summer 2017 he was the commander of the special forces of the military ( Özel Kuvetler ).

Alongside Ömer Halisdemir, he played an important role in defending the headquarters of the special forces against attacking coup plotters in the 2016 coup attempt .

He was in charge of the military operation Euphrates Shield in Syria. In the summer of 2017 he was withdrawn from the special forces and appointed commander of the 2nd Corps, which he perceived as a downgrade. He announced that he would not accept the transfer and would instead retire. President Erdogan then took an unusual step personally and commented publicly that there was no such thing as "disappointment" in the army and that the general now had to do his duty in the new post.
