The unit was founded in 1952 under the name Hususi ve Yardımcı Muharip Birlikleri . The formation was made in order to have forces to carry out covert operations behind enemy lines for information gathering and for various command operations. Due to the changed military situation after the 1990s, the unit was restructured several times and received its current name in 1992. During the restructuring, the Bordo Bereliler were equipped and trained by the United States.
