Olaf Heine (* 1968 in Hanover ) is a German photographer and director of music videos and commercials .

biography

Olaf Heine first completed his training as a draftsman and then studied architecture. During his subsequent community service, Heine got his first commissioned work as a photographer from the band Terry Hoax . In 1992 he photographed the cover of their long-playing record Freedom Circus . The collaboration with the Hanoverian band continued on three other albums. In 1992, Heine also began collaborating with Fury in the Slaughterhouse . For their album Mono , Heine took the photos together with Jim Rakete .

In 1993 he moved to Berlin and studied photography at the Lette-Verein in Berlin until 1995 . During his training he photographed Die Ärzte for the cover photos of the album Planet Punk . Heine has a similarly close relationship with the internationally successful band Rammstein , for which he began working in 1997. He made the cover photos for the single Engel . The later albums Live from Berlin , Reise, Reise and Made in Germany 1995-2011 also contain photo material designed by Heine. It was also Rammstein who signed him for a documentary on their first US tour, which enabled Heine to establish contacts with the American music industry.

You can now find Heine's photographic works on album covers of numerous international artists such as B. Iggy Pop , Bon Jovi , Sting , Chris Cornell , Bad Religion , Die Toten Hosen , Papa Roach , Westernhagen , Paul Oakenfold , Thirty Seconds to Mars , Paul van Dyk , Michael Bublé , Chris Rea , Cold and the Eagles . He photographed numerous personalities from film, television and sports, u. a. Til Schweiger , Matthias Schweighöfer , Franka Potente , Heike Makatsch , Coldplay , REM , Die Fantastischen Vier , Thomas Kretschmann , Dirk Nowitzki , Oliver Kahn , Bastian Schweinsteiger , Mario Gómez and the German national soccer team . His photographic work has been published in numerous magazines, including Vanity Fair , Rolling Stone , Details, Musikexpress , Elle , MAX , Stern , Spiegel , Die Zeit , Focus and Playboy .

Olaf Heine specializes mainly in portrait photos and expresses himself mainly in black and white pictures. He continues this preference in his music videos, which he has now made for various artists, such as B. Die Ärzte, Die Toten Hosen, Paul van Dyk, Reamonn, Ich + Ich , Silbermond and The Eagles. For the video Sometimes women ... He was awarded an Echo Music Prize in 2000 by Die Ärzte . Heine often uses techniques such as analogue large format or Polaroid photography. He directed a full-length portrait of the band Fury in the Slaughterhouse in 1996 and made a documentary about the band Reamonn in 2004.

Heine lived in the USA between 1998 and 2009, where he ran a photo studio in Los Angeles . At the same time, he opened a studio in Berlin in 2001 and commuted between the two metropolises. In recent years, Heine has also been able to gain a foothold as a photographer and director in the international advertising industry and has received several awards. He has participated in campaigns for clients such as Adidas , BMW , O2 , MINI , Rolex , Sony , Bitburger , Hugo Boss, etc.

Heine became a father in 2007 and has since lived mainly in Berlin again. A year later he published his first photo book Leaving the Comfort Zone with Hatje Cantz Verlag . Since 2009, Heine has been teaching photography at the Design Academy Berlin , University of Communication and Design. In 2010 Olaf Heine published his second volume of books in Hatje Cantz Verlag, which he called I love you but I've chosen rock .
