Papa Roach is a US-based Metal - and Rock Band , which in 1993 in Vacaville ( California was founded). At the beginning of the new millennium, with the album Infest, the band was part of the commercially successful Nu-Metal wave that had developed in the “ crossover boom” of the 1990s. The resulting single Last Resort became a hit and reached high positions in the hit lists in several countries. As a result, the group was nominated for numerous international music awards such as the Grammy and the MTV Video Music Award . Already after her successful debut she distanced herself step by step from the music genre Nu Metal and since then has been dealing with different styles of rock music . The band was influenced u. a. by Faith No More and Rage Against the Machine . The band name "Papa Roach" comes from singer Jacoby Shaddix . He testified that his grandfather's last name was "Roatch", but that he was also nicknamed "Papa". He committed suicide in 2006. The band has a mascot in the form of a cockroach (Engl. Cockroach) . To date, Papa Roach have received multiple record sales awards and sold more than 25 million albums worldwide.

history

Foundation and first steps (1993–2000)

The origins of Papa Roach can be traced back to the members' high school days, where singer Jacoby Shaddix , who preferred to be addressed by his nickname Coby Dick , as well as guitarist Jerry Horton, bassist Will James and drummer Dave Buckner met. The band was able to quickly rise to a local size in their hometown of Vacaville , as concerts were opened early on for better-known bands such as the Deftones , Fu Manchu or Suicidal Tendencies . In 1994 the band released the EP Potatoes for Christmas independently . Motivated by these small successes, the band wanted to record an album. However, bassist Will James was kicked out of the band because he would rather take care of a church-run summer camp and was therefore no longer willing to tour with the band. The 16-year-old ex-roadie Tobin Esperance joined the band as a replacement.

At the end of 1996 Papa Roach began to record a demo tape called Old Friends from Young Years , which was released on February 4, 1997 on the Onion Hardcore label. In 1998 another publication appeared with the EP Five Tracks Deep . But only with the release of another EP in 1999, which was called Let 'em Know , the band could claim a contract with the major label DreamWorks Records , which made it possible for the band to record and release a studio album. Jay Baumgardner, who had already worked with several Nu Metal bands such as Spineshank and Orgy , was hired as producer .

"Infest" and quick successes (2000–2002)

On April 25, 2000 the band released their debut album Infest . The album is still the most commercially successful album in the band's history. The album reached number five in Germany and the USA and number nine in Great Britain. Infest has been awarded triple platinum in the US, double platinum in Canada and silver in the UK. Infest also managed to be awarded gold in Austria and Switzerland . The success of the Single Last Resort was increased on September 18, 2000. The song was also able to rank high in several countries. The song made it to number four in Media Control's single charts in Germany , where the single later also achieved platinum status. Further top ten placements were third place in Great Britain and seventh place in Austria. In the USA, Last Resort was only 57th on the respective hit list. Other singles were Broken Home , Between Angels & Insects and Dead Cell . The band was also able to convince live as support for Rage Against the Machine, and Limp Bizkit also put great emphasis on Papa Roach according to their own statement .

After Last Resort had been nominated for an MTV Video Music Award in the Best New Artist category in the same year , but could not prevail against Macy Gray's I Try , Papa Roach also made two at the 43rd Grammy Awards in 2001 Categories to be nominated. On the one hand as Best New Artist , on the other hand in the Best Short Form Music Video category for the music video of the second single Broken Home released by Infest . However, the band also had to admit defeat here. The award went to Shelby Lynne and the Foo Fighters for their video for Learn to Fly .

"Lovehatetragedy" and "Getting Away with Murder" (2002-2006)

The second studio album Lovehatetragedy was produced by Brendan O'Brien , who had made a name for himself by working with modern rock bands. It was published on June 18, 2002 and, from the point of view of many critics, could only partially build on the success of Infest . The band was accused of a lack of hits and of having written less catchy songs. In general, the band no longer oriented itself towards its musical roots, but was more willing to experiment. For example, some songs contain punk elements. Thus Papa Roach distanced themselves musically from Nu Metal earlier than other bands, while better known representatives like Korn or Linkin Park only distanced themselves from this style years later. The decoupled singles She Loves Me Not and Time and Time Again could not achieve any noteworthy chart positions. However, the album itself entered the hit lists better than its predecessor. In several countries the album made it into the top ten of the respective charts. The highest ranking was second in the USA. In Germany, the album made it to number six and was one position less successful than the debut. The album also achieved gold status in the USA, Canada, Great Britain and Switzerland. From this point onwards, Jacoby Shaddix would like to be addressed by his real name again instead of his nickname "Coby Dick". The album tour lasted until 2003. In the meantime, the band joined the "Anger Management" tour of the rapper Eminem . In the same year Papa Roach also made a guest contribution with the song "Anxiety" by the hip-hop group The Black Eyed Peas , which was published on their third album Elephunk . They also recorded the song “Don't Look Back” with the group NERD exclusively for the soundtrack of the film Biker Boyz .

The third Howard Benson-produced studio album Getting Away with Murder was distributed in contrast to the first two albums under Geffen Records . It was finally released on August 31, 2004. The album continued the path chosen by Lovehatetragedy and received mostly muted reviews. Chart placements also fell back. While its predecessor was still in second place in the US, Getting Away with Murder only came in 17th. The album achieved the highest placements in Germany and Austria, where it reached number 8. In the USA, however, the album managed to get platinum status and in Canada the album also received a gold award. The second single, Scars , was a hit in the US and made it to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is still the highest ranking of the band with a single in America. With this song Papa Roach managed to get a gold award. In addition to Scars , the title song Getting Away with Murder and Take Me were released as a pre-release single . In addition, an extended play called Rolling Stone Original could be viewed digitally from November 9th . It contains three live recordings of the songs She Loves Me Not , Last Resort and Getting Away with Murder .

"The Paramour Sessions" and Buckner's exit (2006–2009)

Papa Roach changed studios for the upcoming studio album. It was set up in a mansion in Hollywood Hills belonging to oil heiress Daisy Canfield, who was killed in a car accident in 1933, and bears the name The Paramour Mansion , from which the later name of the studio album was modified. The two previous albums were recorded in the Royaltone Studios in Los Angeles, while Infest was still in the NRG Studios in North Hollywood. Like Getting Away with Murder , The Paramour Sessions was produced by Howard Benson. The album was released on September 12, 2006, debuted at number 16 on the Billboard 200, and sold 37,000 copies in its first week. Outside the USA, however, the publication in the hit lists was worse. Then placed The Paramour Sessions in Germany and Austria at No. 35. In the UK, growth was only space 61. Moreover, it was for the band for the first time to have won any award for record sales. To Be Loved , Forever , Time Is Running Out and Reckless were released as singles .

“In the meantime I was haunted by surreal beings, had disembodied sex with the ghosts of old Hollywood, learned to see ghosts. In addition, I now know what it feels like when a spirit crosses your body. At the end of the sessions it was clear to us that we had to fucking run away, otherwise we would have gone completely crazy. "

- Jacoby Shaddix on time in The Paramour Mansion

On July 17th and 24th 2007 Papa Roach released one EP each. On the one hand, a live session , which is exclusively available on iTunes and shows three live recordings of the songs Reckless , Scars and Forever . The other hit 3 Pack: Forever , which contains radio edits by Forever and … To Be Loved , as well as the studio version of Scars . During this time, drummer Dave Buckner took time out because he couldn't get his drug problems under control. At the beginning of 2008 it was officially confirmed that Buckner had left Papa Roach to be admitted to a rehab clinic. Shaddix confirmed that they are still working on a new album. Shortly thereafter, Tony Palermo was introduced as the successor. At the beginning of 2009 Buckner sued Papa Roach, the label Universal Records and Cherry Lane Publishing because of unpaid royalties. He demanded that Papa Roach and the companies mentioned break up. The band borrowed $ 210,000 from Broadway Federal Bank without informing him beforehand. He also made it clear that he was still the owner of Papa Roach LLC, Viva la cucaracha Music Inc., New Noize Records Inc., Papa Roach Touring Inc. and PR Reality LLC. He also accused the band of having funded an additional $ 400,000 in recording sessions for a music video. In order to be able to repay the advance payment from Universal, the band had transferred their own royalties to an account. It is not entirely clear whether the lawsuit was enforced.

"Metamorphosis" (2009–2012)

After the last two studio albums were released on Geffen Records , the group switched again to the record company and signed a contract with DCG Records , a sub-label of Interscope . Jay Baumgardner, who had produced the successful debut album Infest , was hired as producer. James Michael became co-producer . As with The Paramour Sessions , work on Metamorphosis took place in The Paramour Mansion . The album was released on March 24, 2009. It could position itself better than its predecessor. The album made it to number 8 on the American Billboard 200 . So it was not only the highest ranking since Lovehatetragedy , but also the first in the top ten since then. The album also made it into the charts in other countries, at number 23 in Germany, number 12 in Austria and number 21 in Switzerland. As singles were Hollywood Whore , Lifeline , I Almost Told You That I Loved You and Had Enough decoupled. The band released their seventh extended play Naked and Fearless: Acoustic EP on June 23 . It contains three acoustic recordings of the songs Lifeline , Had Enough and Carry Me .

Papa Roach released their first best-of album on Geffen Records , which includes numerous well-known songs as well as a newly recorded song entitled Just Go (Never Look Back) . … To Be Loved: The Best of Papa Roach was available on June 29, 2010. The band itself was against the release of the album and advised their fans against buying the album, as they were planning to release another release and this would otherwise lead to confusion. Jacoby Shaddix also emphasized that Interscope had made nothing but empty promises, which is why they will leave this label. This time Papa Roach joined Eleven Seven Music . The first publication about the new company came from Time for Annihilation: On the Record & On the Road . The album, produced by David Bendeth ( Breaking Benjamin ), was released on August 31st and includes nine live recordings from the previous tour with Shinedown . However, the compilation also contains five new tracks, three of which were released as singles with Kick in the Teeth , Burn and No Matter What , for which there were also music videos.

"The Connection" (2012-2014)

At the end of 2011 the band began working on a new album. In addition to the actual album with Even If I Could, a soundtrack for the film Marvel's The Avengers was created . The first official single from The Connection was released on June 23, 2012, Still Swingin . The upcoming tours had to be canceled because Shaddix was struggling with a skin disease. Shortly afterwards, on August 30th, the band released the music video for Still Swingin . The Connection was released on September 28, 2012 in Germany. It rose to number 27 on the Media Control Charts. Chart positions were similar in other countries. In the US, the album made it to number 17 and was worse than Metamorphosis , which made it to number eight. The album tour began on October 28th in Des Moines, Iowa. The band was sometimes accompanied by Stone Sour , who presented their album House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 at the same time . On November 20, the second single Where Did The Angels Go? , for which there was also a music video. On January 22, 2013, Before I Die followed as the third single. The corresponding video was already available on the Internet on December 22nd.

"FEAR" (2015)
"Crooked Teeth" (2016-2017)
Papa Roach at the Reload Festival 2018

In January 2016 Papa Roach announced that they were working on a new studio album. Jacoby Shaddix announced in an interview in mid-July 2016 that the new album was expected in early 2017. As early as November 2016, Papa Roach began to release the first single releases of the not yet released album. With "Crooked Teeth" as the first single, the singles Help (February '17), Periscope (March '17) and American Dreams (April '17) followed in the new year . In May 2017 the full album came on the official market, which bears the same title as the first single: "Crooked Teeth"; released under the label of ElevenSeven. The album debuted at number 6 on the official German charts and at number 20 in the US Top 200 Billboard charts. This year Papa Roach were also on tour through Europe until the end of October 2017. a. in Germany, Finland, England, Scotland & France.

"Who Do You Trust?" (Since 2018)

On October 5, 2018, the band released two new singles, Renegade Music and Who Do You Trust? . At Who Do You Trust? it is a music video. Instead, "Renegade Music" only got an audio video. On November 16, 2018, the band released their third single, "Not The Only One". They also announced the next album, "Who Do You Trust?" which was published on January 18, 2019.

In spring 2020, Papa Roach toured Europe with Hollywood Undead as co-headliner and Ice Nine Kills . Guitarist Jerry Horton was not on stage because he had broken two fingers two weeks earlier. He was represented by Anthony Esperance , the brother of bassist Tobin Esperance. Horton appeared as a guest at the concert in Munich on February 24th. Leipzig remained the last stop on the tour. It had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

Music style and reception

The band is stylistically from crossover bands such as Faith No More , Rage Against the Machine , Beastie Boys , Fugazi , Red Hot Chili Peppers , Biohazard , Suicidal Tendencies and Henry Rollins , as well as from classic bands such as Black Sabbath , Led Zeppelin , Metallica and Pink Floyd as well as Cypress Hill and Run-DMC hip-hop groups . Bassist Tobin Esperance also said that reggae had a huge impact on his bass playing.

At the beginning of their career Papa Roach belonged to the then popular Nu Metal , which made it possible for the band to reach a wider audience. In contrast to other genre representatives such as Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park, Papa Roach only used a few rap and hip-hop interludes in their songs. Rock Hard editor Marcus Schleutermann reminded singer Jacoby Shaddix of a mixture of Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit) and Zack de la Rocha (Rage Against the Machine). From the second album, Lovehatetragedy , the band turned away from Nu Metal much earlier than other bands and focused more on dominating guitar playing. In general, people were more willing to experiment afterwards. That album, for example, contains influences from punk.

The album The Paramour Sessions also has “ Gothic Rock ” elements, which is clear from the song Forever . Therefore, the later style is simply referred to as alternative rock . In addition, the band wrote increasingly ballad-like pieces on their last albums, although many critics were of the opinion that the Californians could have saved themselves many such songs. Many reviewers are of the opinion that the band has not yet been able to build on the successful major debut Infest , which is also reflected in the weaker chart positions. In Germany, the first three albums made it into the top ten of Media Control, while the successor albums no longer made it into the top 20. Schleutermann wrote in a later review of Metamorphosis :

“It's not easy for PAPA ROACH, because nine years ago with their triple platinum debut“ Infest ”and the hit singles 'Last Resort' and 'Broken Home' they set the bar so high that they subsequently broke it threatened. But even if the following albums were no longer commercially available, their quality was always convincing. "
