House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Stone Sour . It was released on October 19, 2012 in Germany and is the first part of the double album of the same name . The second part House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 was published on April 5, 2013.

History of origin

prehistory

According to Corey Taylor, the idea for the concept album already existed before the release of the last studio album, Audio Secrecy . When Slipknot played at the Sonisphere Festival in 2011 , the idea should have gotten more concrete and Taylor started recording some demos after the tour. According to Taylor, the other band members were immediately taken with the idea. In the studio, however, the band realized that the material would have to be released on two albums.

production

On March 20, 2012, the band officially began work on a new album. Shortly thereafter, however, the band announced that longtime bassist Shawn Economaki had resigned. The band only wanted to explain the motivation at the right time. Guitarist James Root said he was still a friend of the band. A permanent replacement for Economaki has not yet been confirmed. The album was therefore recorded by Rachel Bolan, as announced in June. The bass player, who became known through his work at Skid Row , temporarily helped out in the studio during the band's recordings and played both parts. The album was not produced by Nick Raskulinecz , like the two previous albums, but by David Bottrill. This already produced u. a. Albums for Tool , Staind and Muse . The band members were satisfied with the production.

“It may sound trite, but producer David Bottrill really became our fifth member of the band as we recorded it. Not only did he fully understand the concept, but he also teased the best performance out of us without going too far. A lot of psychological skills were required from Bottrill's side. "

- Josh Rand : in an interview with Metal Hammer

Origin of the title

The title comes from a song called The House of Gold & Bones , which was written at the time Audio Secrecy was recording . Taylor took the title from a book on correspondence during the American Civil War. In it, happiness and sadness are said to have been described with the words "gold" and "bones". He was fascinated by the play on words and called it "a wonderful metaphor for the human soul".

promotion

On June 11, Taylor announced on his Twitter profile that the album would be called House of Gold & Bones and would consist of two parts. A total of 24 songs were recorded, eleven of which made it to the first part. He also named the titles for the songs Absolute Zero , RU486 , A Rumor of Skin , and Taciturn . Taylor performed the latter piece in an acoustic version at the 2012 Download Festival on June 9th.

In order to promote the upcoming album, the band organized a kind of scavenger hunt via Twitter. The members hid packages at the venues of Taylors and Roots of other band Slipknot, during the Mayhem Festival , which hid drumsticks, picks and, ultimately, lyrics from the new album. Then the band posted a photo of the hiding place on Twitter. With the codes contained in the packages, fans could unlock the cover on the homepage as well as the first songs with Gone Sovereign and Absolute Zero .

As a result, the two songs were uploaded simultaneously to the Roadrunner Records YouTube channel at the beginning of August . The band also released the track list. Both Gone Souvereign and Absolute Zero were officially released as singles on August 24th. From then on, they were made available digitally for download on Amazon and ITunes . Music videos were made for both songs, with the video for Gone Sovereign being broadcast on the Internet on October 11th. The video for Absolute Zero finally followed on November 14th . The recordings took place in Des Moines under the direction of PR Brown, who has already been hired as a director for several of the band's music videos. For other songs, the band occasionally published 20 to 30-second excerpts on their SoundCloud page and on October 12th, RU486, presented another complete song, which has not yet been released as a single.

style

Taylor described the style of the album as a mixture of " Pink Floyd's The Wall and Alice in Chains ' Dirt on Stereoide". Guitarist Josh Rand added that the songs would make a story. It is about a man who makes certain decisions in his life to go a certain way, with each song reflecting different sides of his personality. Taylor added that the person in question is growing up and struggling with it. Taylor also said that much of his personal biography would go into the album.

“The story itself is fictitious and creates a different world. But the characters arise from the memories and experiences that I've made in my life so far. So it was important to me to add a good dose of realism to the whole thing so that the fans can find their own point of reference. And of course it's also about decisions that I have made in my life or have not made. "

- Corey Taylor : in an interview with Metal Hammer

Rand also said that they had strayed too far from the harshness of the debut of the same name . Since concept albums do not adhere to the rules in principle, the band was able to compose faster pieces again. The band also had to start differently because they wanted to tell a story.

“Everything was allowed. It's a different approach than a "normal" album. You don't think about whether the new material is a hit or a single. Instead, you have to tell a story. "

- Josh Rand

Meaning of the lyrics in relation to the plot

According to Taylor, the opener Gone Sovereign defines the keynote of the entire album. It's about the selfish pursuit of life and it's also the starting point of the story. Absolute Zero represents the opposite and is meant to be a subconscious side in all of us. The person wants to take a step forward in this. In A Rumor of Skin , an influencing voice appears in the subconscious for the first time, which looks like a depression, but is presented as not that bad. In The Travelers Pt. 1 shows the human side of the protagonist again and complains that inner peace is over. In the piece Tired the person has to make a great sacrifice in the inner struggle, which takes a lot of strength. There is a risk of being held up with blame and stuck in life. In RU486 the man is unable to choose between the inner voices. The listener gets to hear the inner anger. Something new wants to replace the inner voices in My Name is Allen and thus seems to make the madness perfect. However, the people in Taciturn try to bring all these things down to a common denominator and want to find a compromise between the two poles. However, this does not work, so that the protagonist in The Travelers Pt. 2 realizes that he is completely defenseless. In Last of the Real , the cycle that began with Gone Sovereign is closed again, with the selfish side again expressing their superiority. According to Taylor, this is a kind of cliffhanger that closes at the beginning of House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 .

reception

The editors of the German magazine Metal Hammer named House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 album of the month in the November issue. Editor Jakob Kranz said that you have to be patient to understand the album, as you are dealing with Stone Sour's most intense work. With this album, the band would have "cut itself off" from Slipknot . He was particularly surprised by the stylistic diversity that would range from “Power Rock of the Seventies” to “Metallica-BLACK ALBUM-Punch”. He also praised the vocal performance of Corey Taylor, who "authentically transports the character's emotions in every single syllable and presents the full range of his skills from angry slipknot barking with a swollen carotid artery to the conspiratorial Geoff Tate murmur." He awarded six out of a possible seven and was of the opinion that nothing would go wrong with the second part.

Peter Kubaschk from Powermetal.de , put the singing performances of Taylor in the foreground. He had an "incredible feeling in the vocal cords, as well as a real metal alloy to the furious extremes" and described him as a kind of modern John Bush . Thus the band aroused high expectations for the second part. Kubaschk concluded from this that the complete concept album would crown the band's career and finally awarded a grade of 9.5 out of ten points.

For Moritz Grütz from Metal1.Info House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 is a masterpiece that would be much more rocking than its predecessor, since Audio Secrecy did not meet with open ears everywhere and it was questionable whether Stone Sour would have turned the corner again would get. The band would present themselves more powerful than ever, which would benefit the more soulful moments of the album. The rating was also 9.5 out of ten possible points.

However, Thomas Kupfer from Rock Hard magazine was more critical of the album. He believed that Corey Taylor's talent had given way to a certain predictability. Admittedly, "no song undermines a certain level of quality, the production is crisp as usual, but you won't find any outliers upwards, that is, real hits." He also spoke of songs that were created from the "songwriting kit box" of any modern metal band. For Stone Sour, that fact would be a bit poor. He awarded seven out of ten possible points.

Also for Michael Edele from Laut.de some songs turned out to be mixed, even if the story is conclusive and logical. Some songs just wouldn't be captivating, such as B. A Rumor of Skin and My Name is Allen . So the question arises "whether it would have been better to concentrate on a single, strong album." However, this could only be said after the second part. However, he praised the fact that Taylor's vocal cords tugged well again and again and that the guitarists would play the solos like balls to each other. His personal favorite is Influence of a Drowsy God , which comes across as the most ambitious. He awarded three out of five points.

The online magazine Loudwire selected House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 as the rock album of the decade.

Chart placements

House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 was only more successful in the charts in Austria, where it reached number four. In Germany and the USA (seventh place), as well as Switzerland (eighth place), the album performed worse than its predecessors. The album only reached number 13 in Great Britain. The singles Gone Sovereign and Absolute Zero did not make it to the regular hit lists.

Presentation

The album is only available in digipack . It is packaged so that when it is opened it can be put together to form a house. However, the house is incomplete and can only be completed with House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 . Instead of the lyrics, the booklet contains the appropriate story for the songs. The booklet bears the Latin inscription In Domus, De Aurum, Et Ossium , which has been translated incorrectly , which in German means something like "in a house of gold and bones". A more correct translation for this would be in domo auri et ossium . This inscription can also be found on the booklet of the second part, which is structured similarly to the first.
