House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Stone Sour . In terms of content, it ties in with the concept of the predecessor House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 , which was published on October 19, 2012. The plot ends with the second part. The release date in Germany was April 5, 2013.

History of origin

The album was recorded at the same time as the first House of Gold & Bones part in the Sound Farm Studios in Des Moines , Iowa , as originally only one album was planned to be recorded. As early as October, when House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 was released, all 12 songs of the second part were completely recorded and were already in the mix process. The producer was David Bottrill (known for his production of the albums by Tool , Staind and Muse .) Since original bassist Shawn Economaki had left the band, these twelve songs were also recorded with Rachel Bolan from Skid Row , which was done in June 2012 was announced. He recorded the bass parts for all 23 songs (part 1 and part 2 together) in five days. However, Bolan is still not a permanent member of Stone Sour, because the schedules of both sides have not matched. An official successor for Economaki has not yet been determined.

“We had a real problem because we weren't making any headway with the bass player line-up. Suddenly Josh suggested Rachel Bolan - we paused for a moment, looked at each other and knew: this makes a hundred percent sense. Bolan can play the hard things just as well as the soft ones and has his own style. I called him the next day and he was there straight away. "

- Corey Taylor : in an interview with Metal Hammer

On February 12, 2013 the band began to operate publicly with the release of the first single Do Me a Favor for the second part. The song was distributed digitally through Amazon and ITunes . The piece had the first performance on the same day at a concert in Tucson , Arizona , during the tour cycle of the first part. The cover of the album was publicly available from January 30th. A day later, the album's tracklist was finalized and published. A comic-style music video for the single was filmed under the direction of Phil Mucci, after PR Brown directed the last five Stone Sour videos, as well as several Slipknot clips. The video was previewed on March 1st on Stone Sour's YouTube channel. The music video was only available on the Internet from March 27th. Similar to the first part, 20 to 30-second excerpts from the album were presented on the band's SoundCloud page from March 25th . On March 29th, a new song was released with Gravesend , but it was not released as a single. On April 3rd, Stone Sour offered the entire album as a free stream on their website.

Singer Taylor also announced that the story would be adapted as a comic and will be published on April 17th by Dark Horse in a total of ten volumes.

style

The first part was often described as very aggressive and viewed as a return to the musical direction at the time of the band 's debut of the same name . The second part, on the other hand, is darker and more melancholy and, according to Corey Taylor, forms the broadest spectrum stylistically that Stone Sour have ever opened up. Taylor also testified that House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 was full of great drums. To continue the story, which is about a young man who makes certain decisions in his life or not, he said that it would be in the eye of the beholder whether there would be a happy ending, since the story with a decision begins, but also ends. He also wanted the short story to help readers build a stronger sense of themselves.

action

“It all started with the human figure. At first I had to figure out how to deal with this character. How he finds his way around this crazy world that I had in mind in a cool way and has to make far-reaching decisions. When we then wrote the music and the lyrics, the whole thing developed an incredible dynamic of its own. Other characters came to my mind and I noticed that a real story was growing. I was absolutely over the moon because it had the potential to be something really cool, interesting that makes the listener think. "

- Corey Taylor : on the making of the short story

The young man wakes up after the selfish side regained the upper hand and finds himself in a crazy world. He doesn't know how he got there, nor where he is. In search of answers, he is hunted by the "Numbers", a wild horde, and meets two other people who help him clear up the questions. You will find out that the young man should go on the way to an event that is Conflagration (in German about major fire calls). This ceremony celebrates change and agency, with the protagonist at the center. He is not interested in it, but has to go there anyway to escape the Numbers who are still chasing him.

“If you follow your personal story in your mind, you can see where certain experiences have taken you. What would have happened if you had changed your mind here or there? The Conflagration takes place in this crazy world where nothing is quite as it seems -. And everything you do affects the world decisively "

- Corey Taylor : in an interview with Metal Hammer

Chart placements

The album did better than the first part in many countries. House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 made it to number three in Germany (predecessor at number seven), which together with the album Audio Secrecy , which was released in 2010, represents the band's top- ranking release in the German album charts . In Austria and Switzerland, too, Stone Sour's fifth album has the highest chart position in the respective hit lists (third and seventh together with Audio Secrecy ). In Great Britain, the album also performed better and, in contrast to its predecessor, which only reached number 13, made it to number eleven. In the USA House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 performed worse and reached rank ten, making it the lowest- placed album on the Billboard 200 since the debut of the same name in 2002 (rank 46) . The single that was released did not make it into the hit lists.

reception

The album was partly received more cautiously than the first House of Gold & Bones part. On Laut.de Kai Butterweck was of the opinion that one could have saved half of the 23 songs. Although he praised Taylor's broad vocal spectrum, he said that not all songs really get stuck: "Unfortunately, the massive background rarely provides the right cornerstones with similarly multi-faceted hustle and bustle. The bold background bulge is too clumsy and stoic too often lost in minor-heavy everyday spheres. " He was convincing about the three songs at the end of the record and gave an overall rating of only two out of five possible stars.

Mortiz Gütz from Metal1.Info was also disappointed with House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 . He stated that the band had finally reached stadium rock with their fifth album. "The 'bad thing' about it is that Stone Sour are now so good at it that numbers like 'Sadist' and 'The Conflagration', which this applies to most, are the highlights on 'The House Of Gold & Bones Part II "Represent." He described the work as an album with “mostly entertaining rock that gets along well over long distances without any special incidents. However, without any particular depth. ”The final rating was 7.5 out of ten possible points, while he awarded 9.5 out of ten points for the first part.

Thomas Kupfer awarded seven out of ten points in Rock Hard magazine . For him, the album left a similarly mixed impression as its predecessor. The albums weren't really bad, but the common thread that "holds the big picture together" is missing throughout the entire playing time. He spoke positively about the songs '82 , The Uncanny Valley , The Conflagration and the title track, which "cannot completely compensate for the lengthy parts of the record".

Peter Kudbaschk from the e-zine Powermetal.de was far more positive about House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 . Although he was also of the opinion that the second part did not fully meet the expectations of the predecessor and that the beginning of the album had been bumpy, the album would continue to improve and reach its climax in the final quarter. You wouldn't have the impression of hearing twelve individual songs and thus creating a link with the concept album. He awarded eight out of ten possible points.

Matthias Weckmann from Metal Hammer was of the opinion that the album is characterized by dark "colors and thoughtfulness" and that "Riff-Beißer" rarely appear in comparison to the first part: "This disc works like a soundtrack on which the story concept is the music This is ingenious for a socially isolated mental cinema in which the concept unfolds in front of the inner eye, but hardly offers any space for liberated headbanging. " He criticized something, however, that on the album the "free spirit" would sometimes let off steam too "forgotten". This would damage the dynamic, but benefit self-discovery and pointed out that House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 would be exactly that. He awarded five out of seven possible points.

Track list

In terms of playing time, the album is around 51 minutes longer than the first part, which was only 44 minutes long and has eleven tracks. It's not Stone Sour's longest album, though. The 2002 debut album was already longer with 13 tracks and a playing time of 52 minutes, as was the direct predecessor of House of Gold & Bones , Audio Secrecy from 2010, which regularly contains 14 tracks and is the longest so far at around 55 minutes The band's album is. Like its predecessor ( Gallows Humor ), the Japan edition also contains a demo tape with the title Shine that is no longer used .

trip

Before the regular House of Gold & Bones - Part 2 Tour , the band took part in the Road to the Golden Gods Tour organized by Revolver Golden Gods , which lasted from April 2nd to April 24th. As the tour continued, the band performed at various international festivals such as Rock am Ring and Rock im Park in Germany, as well as at the British Download Festival in Donington Park . The tour bassist is still Johnny Chow from the group Cavalera Conspiracy , who was on the tour for House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 .

“Johnny Chow will take over the bass at our concerts. He has played for Soulfly , Cavalera Conspiracy, Systematic , Fireball Ministry and My Ruin in recent years and has a correspondingly broad spectrum. And - crucial on tour: He's a cool guy. "
