The Connection is the sixth regular studio album by the American rock band Papa Roach and the second with Tony Palermo on drums. It has been available in Germany since September 28, 2012.

History of origin

The work for The Connection began at the end of 2011. In addition to the actual album, the song Even If I Could was also created, which was the soundtrack to the film Marvel's The Avengers . The first official single, however, was Still Swingin 'on July 24th. Due to a skin disease caused by singer Jacoby Shaddix, the band had to cancel the upcoming concerts (including the -up to five concerts- complete Uproar Festival). This delayed the video shoot for the new single. The video for Still Swingin 'was released on August 30th. The Connection was released on September 28th in Germany, three and four days later in Great Britain and the United States. It is the first studio album that was distributed through Eleven Seven Music, where the band had signed a contract two years earlier, as the previous label Interscope would have made nothing but empty promises. However, it is not the first release on the label. In 2010 a compilation was released with Time for Annihilation: On the Record & On the Road . In addition to Still Swingin , Where Did the Angels Go? , as well as Before I Die released as singles on January 22nd, with the latter having the associated music video already available on the Internet on December 22nd.

"We always just kept coming back to 'The Connection." What 'The Connection' means to us, it's our connection to the music, it's the connection of this music to the fans, it's the connection that we make onstage with our music, it's the connection from fan-to-fan on the social Internet marketing media world. "

The The Connection Tour began on 28 October 2012 at the Woolys in Des Moines, Iowa. At times the band was on tour with Stone Sour , who presented their album House of Gold & Bones - Part 1 at the same time .

style

Stylistically, the album includes all the musical components that Papa Roach have worked with in their career. Among other things, influences from the crossover as well as from other different styles of rock music. The album also contains guest contributions from electro and dubstep artists. Still Swingin Tylias is featured on the first single , and Where Did the Angels Go? Downlink and on the tenth album track Not That Beautiful Shahnaz.

Charts and chart placements

The chart placements were similar to the previous albums. Then placed The Connection in the United States in 17th place, and in this respect was worse than the direct predecessor Metamorphosis , which it to number eight of the Billboard 200 managed. In Germany, too, the album only rose to rank 27 and, like its two predecessors Metamorphosis (23rd place) and The Paramour Sessions (35th place), was not in the top ten. In Austria the album reached number 24, which is why it was worse than its predecessor, which made it to number 12. In Switzerland, the position remained the same at 21st place. Only in Great Britain was the album better represented in the charts, where it came to position 37 while the previous album was still at position 42.

reception

Similar to its predecessors, the album received mostly average reviews. Marcus Schleutermann from Rock Hard was of the opinion that new impulses would have been necessary after the last album. However, "irrelevant gimmicks like programming break and computer voice" as well as "intrusive synth sounds" annoy him, where he named the first single Still Swingin ' and Wish You Never Met Me as examples . He also criticized the Loudness production, in which "the bass and treble are extremely in the foreground and in return the mids are almost faded out, which creates a penetrating dominance of drums and the guitars." The band is too talented and experienced to to deliver a bad album, but the real "kick" would not be there. He awarded seven out of ten possible points.

Kai Butterweck from Laut.de said that Papa Roach would do everything right from the ground up, “to bring the open air spectacle to a boil.” However, he also spoke of songs with “over-produced refrains”, “cuddly verses and Newfangled electric thrusts ”, which could not make up their minds,“ whether they would rather be played on the breakfast radio or celebrated on a center stage. ”As examples he cited Before I Die , Wish You Never Met Me and As Far As I Remember . In conclusion, he said that the band would once again sniff the big “Rock Olympus cake”, but they shouldn't really bite into it. The rating was three out of five possible stars.

Marius Mutz from Metal1.Info was also of the opinion that the approach of the songs was always solid and that no weak points could be identified. On the other hand, the overall product would not really be knocked off its feet, as one would have heard everything too often. Although he found the “spacey feeling” with songs like Give Me Back My Life pleasantly surprising, The Connection couldn't keep up the tension for too long, and he only recommended the album to people who are into albums “which you can follow the first few seconds of each song knows how it will end. ”In the end, he also compared the album with the hit single Last Resort , which had made the band popular, and came to the conclusion that this may seem rough, but still more exciting than the entire album. He awarded 6.5 out of ten possible points.

Peter Kubaschk from Powermetal.de, however, said that Papa Roach had met expectations with The Connection . With Still Swingin 'in particular , the band delivered a real hit, which immediately went "brain and leg." He also praised the fact that the band had looked back on their past more than once and that the song mentioned had been released in 2000 can, which is why it would be a lot of fun. He also put the catchiness of some of the songs in the foreground, which would make for “jumping kids with dry throats” at concerts, because you just want to sing along. Above all, he stabbed the songs Where Did the Angels Go? , Silence Is The Enemy , Before I Die and Give Me Back My Life and awarded a final grade of 8.5 out of ten possible points.
