NERD or N * E * R * D (short for No-one Ever Really Dies ) is an American hip hop / rock band.

Band history

The band consists of the musicians Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo (known as the producer team under the name The Neptunes ) and the singer Shay Haley . The debut album was released exclusively in Europe in the summer of 2001 and is called In Search of ... , which Williams further elaborates in the CD booklet: In search of love and happiness, in search of the bitch with the big ass or in search of why my brother smokes crack .

NERD 2003

After the basic idea behind NERD was that the project should clearly stand out from the rest of the musical concept of the Neptunes productions, the entire debut was recorded again by the band Spymob with real instruments and given more rock elements. The album with the extension New Version was released worldwide in spring 2002 and achieved gold status in the USA.

The band kept the live instrumentation on their second album Fly or Die (2004), but this time Pharrell and Chad played all the instruments themselves. It is striking that with this album NERD opened up further musically and emphasized in various interviews that they do not want to be limited by any drawers in the future either.

In March 2005, Pharrell Williams made a name for himself when he announced that NERD no longer existed. In an interview with BBC Radio 1, he said, “NERD are dead. I disagree with the management of Virgin Records so it's over. I've been quiet for the past two years. I don't want to throw dirt now either. ”Not much later, however, he seemed to have changed his mind again and announced new tour dates.

The third studio album Seeing Sounds was released on June 10, 2008 in the USA. With this album NERD switched from their former label Virgin (an EMI subsidiary) to Interscope Records (a Universal subsidiary). The title of the album is an allusion to the phenomenon of synesthesia . The first single is the title Everyone Nose , which could be downloaded in advance for free on bbcicecream.com.

After the first single Hot-n-Fun on May 18, 2010, the album Nothing was released on October 29 in Germany.

After the release of the album, things got quiet around the band. Only front man Pharrell Williams drew attention to himself. In 2013 he collaborated with Daft Punk and, together with the French electro duo, landed the international hit Get Lucky , which appeared on the album Random Access Memories . He also worked with Robin Thicke and participated in the single Blurred Lines , which was also a great success. The solo album GIRL , released in early 2014, rounded off his achievements .

After five years, the three band members report back together as NERD and released the single Squeeze Me on January 5, 2015 , which was released on the Columbia label. The single is part of the soundtrack of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water ( SpongeBob SquarePants 3D ), which was released in German cinemas on February 19, 2015.

Two years later, on December 15, 2017, their fifth studio album, No_One Ever Really Dies, was released with guest appearances by artists such as rapper Kendrick Lamar , André 3000 , Gucci Mane , Rihanna and British singer Ed Sheeran .
