Blurred Lines (English for 'blurry lines') is a song by the US R&B singer Robin Thicke , together with rapper T.I. as well as the singer Pharrell Willams. It was released on March 15, 2013 and topped the charts in various countries, including Germany and the United States. Blurred Lines was produced and written by Pharrell Williams with Thicke and TI. On March 10, 2015, a court ruled that part of the title was a plagiarism of the title "Got to Give It Up" by Marvin Gaye and awarded the heirs a compensation payment of 7.4 million dollars.

Music video

The music video for Blurred Lines was released on March 20, 2013. Directed by music video director Diane Martel . Martel let Robin Thicke, TI and Pharrell stand around dressed in suits and the three models Emily Ratajkowski , Jessi M'Bengue and Elle Evans run up and down in front of them without interest. In the background there are two silver balloons that form the phrase “Robin Thicke has a big dick” (= “Robin Thicke has a big tail”). In one scene a sheep is also being carried around. The hashtags #THICKE and #BLURREDLINES can be seen filling the screen in several places . There are two versions of the video, in the first, the models appear topless and with strings clothed, in the second version they wear tops and briefs or hot pants . The unclothed version was blocked by YouTube , but can now be accessed again. A modified version of the video was made for a commercial for Beats by Dr. Dre used.

criticism

The lyrics and the accompanying music video were criticized by a non-profit organization against sexual violence and online commentators for playing down sexual violence, reducing women to sexual objects and reinforcing rape myths . It was asked, for example, whether those involved in the production stage themselves in the knowledge of the media scandal and whether Thicke was consciously serving a trend. Overall, fewer direct concerns about the intentions of production were expressed in the debate, and their social implications and effects were more frequently discussed. Thicke himself rejected the allegations of the Huffington Post and even gave the title feminist traits. Singer Aloe Blacc was also among the critics of the music video . The musical reviews are also broadly based.

Awards for music sales

Blurred Lines has been awarded 1 × gold , 43 × platinum and 3 × diamond worldwide. According to awards, over 14.8 million units of the single were sold (including premium streaming).
