SpongeBob SquarePants 3D (Original title: The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water ) is an American adventure film based on the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants . The film is the second film production for the series , after The SpongeBob SquarePants Film , which was released in 2004, and opened in German cinemas on February 19, 2015.

The magical book, which fulfills the owner's every wish, falls into the hands of the nasty pirate Burger-Bart of all people. With his new acquisition, he gets the infamous Krabby Patty formula. SpongeBob and his friends now have to embark on an adventure across the ocean. To save Formula and its underwater city, Bikini Bottom, the gang must use some superpowers and take on burger beards.

On March 4, 2011, the Los Angeles Times announced that Paramount Pictures was producing "another SpongeBob movie". On February 28, 2012, Paramount Pictures CEO Philippe P. Dauman announced that the film would hit theaters in late 2014. He added that the film is supposed to use "their new trick technique". Nickelodeon is hoping for higher revenue than its predecessor due to the greater popularity since The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie . On June 10, 2014, the original title of the film "The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water" was announced. The film's executive producer and screenwriter is SpongeBob inventor Stephen Hillenburg . Production officially ended in November 2014.

The budget for this film was around $ 74 million. The worldwide box office result was around 325 million US dollars.

animation

The film is made up of two different trick techniques: animation and computer animation . Rough Draft Studios , headquartered in South Korea, was responsible for the underwater scenes . Industrial Light & Magic took over the computer-animated scenes . When asked which animation technique the film will use, director Paul Tibbitt replied : "I don't want to give too much away, but the film will be mainly 2D ".

Filming

The real film scenes were directed by Mike Mitchell . Filming of SpongeBob SquarePants 3D began on September 30, 2013 and ended on November 5 of the same year, while Savannah, Georgia and Tybee Island were used as locations.

Even before the film could be dubbed to the end in the German version, the voice actor for Thaddäus Tentakel, Eberhard Prüter, died . He was able to record the first trailer. In the film he is replaced by Tobias Lelle . The rest of the voice actors are mostly the same as in the series.

The soundtrack for the film was composed by John Debney . Pharrell Williams contributed some songs for the film with his band NERD . One of the songs was by Ennio Morricone .

The release of the film was originally planned for the end of 2014, but was postponed to February 13, 2015. On June 5, 2014, the film was vorverschoben a week to complications with the upcoming film Fifty Shades of Gray by Universal Pictures to avoid.

First scenes from the film were shown at San Diego Comic-Con International on July 25, 2014. The first trailer was released on July 31st.
