Getting Away with Murder is the third official studio album by the California band Papa Roach . It was released on August 31, 2004. It was the band's first album with Geffen Records and reached number 17 on the Billboard charts .

Music genre

On Getting Away with Murder less are Nu-Metal Bonds as earlier albums Lovehatetragedy and Infest included and contains hardly any rap elements. The album is stylistically more in the direction of alternative rock , but the Allmusic Guide also names alternative metal, heavy metal and hard rock as styles . In addition, punk influences such as on Tyranny / Normality and Done with You can be heard. The latter is also determined by changes in tempo. The title track Getting Away with Murder contains industrial elements and Be Free shows certain parallels to the musical style of AC / DC . The song Scars is one of the first ballads by the band and accordingly has a different rhythm than the rest of the pieces on Getting Away with Murder .

reception

The album reached the top 20 of the charts in German-speaking countries and in the United States . After Getting Away with Murder was awarded the gold record in the United States in 2005, it is now certified there with the higher platinum record .

The response of the critics to Getting Away with Murder varied greatly. The website Metacritic calculated an average rating of 59 out of 100 possible points from eight English-language reviews .

There were also different opinions about the album in the German media. In his criticism, rock-hard author Marcus Schleutermann praised Jerry Horton's guitar playing, which is "essential for the recognition value of Papa Roach". He also found Jacoby Shaddix's singing was "equally hard as melodic" and "conveyed emotions". A similar opinion was expressed by Eberhard Dobler from Laut.de , who saw Jacoby Shaddix's “emotional power” as a reason for the band's breakthrough. The reviewer listed "catchy songs [...] and energetic vocals" as the strengths of the band on the album. The e-zine Vampster predicted less commercial success for the album than Infest , but agreed with Laut.de and Rock Hard on vocals and guitar riffs . The majority of the tracks on Getting Away with Murder were well received by the magazine's critics, with the song Scars being described as a "powerful ballad" and Not Listening as a "catchy song".

Armin Linder from Plattentests.de , for example , had a rather cautious opinion about the album , stating that Scars was an “embarrassing hit” and Jacoby Shaddix's vocals were “not always exactly authentic”; the pieces on Getting Away with Murder would be similar, which was a bad sign.
