Hollywood Undead is a nu-metal and crossover band from California .

history

Hollywood Undead was founded in 2005. With increasing popularity on the social network Myspace , the group began in June 2005 as a musical project by Jorel "J-Dog" Decker and Aron "Deuce" Erlichman , who was then "Tha Producer". They presented music on their Myspace profile. As the group grew in popularity, they joined Jeff "Shady" Philips, George "Johnny 3 Tears" Ragan, who was then "The Server", Jordon "Charlie Scene" Terrell, Dylan "Funny Man" Alvarez and Matthew "Da Kurlzz" Busek to the project that took the name Hollywood Undead. The steady growth in attention to the profile animated the MySpace manager Tom Anderson the piece No. 5 to the network's compilation album and to offer the group a contract for the Myspace label, a subcontractor of Interscope . The band made their first live appearance in August 2008 at a festival organized by Virgin Mobile . Hollywood Undead has performed alongside artists such as Foo Fighters , Jack Johnson , Kanye West and Nine Inch Nails . The band won the performance through a voting organized by Virgin Mobile , in which they achieved more than half of all votes cast.

The 2008 debut Swan Songs was released through A&M Octone Records , a Universal Music Group subcontractor. Hollywood Undead sold over 20,000 copies of the debut in just a few weeks, reaching number 22 on the Billboard 200 . A year after the debut, the band released the compilation Desperate Measures with B-sides , live recordings and cover versions via A&M Octone Records . After the compilation was released, the band received the Rock on Request Award for Best Crunk / Rock Rap Artist .

Singer Erlichman left Hollywood Undead in 2010 and was replaced by former American Idol candidate Daniel "Danny" Murillo. After appearances with Avenged Sevenfold and Stone Sour on the Nightmare After Christmas tour , Hollywood Undead released their second album American Tragedy in April 2011 . The album, produced by Don Gilmore, sold more than 65,000 copies in a short period of time and debuted in the top five on the Billboard 200. It reached number 4 on the Billboard 200, in Canada it debuted at number 5 and in the UK at number 43 Then the band played the “Revolt” tour with 10 Years and New Medicine , the “Endless Summer” tour with All That Remains and Hyro da Hero . as well as appearances at festivals such as Rock am Ring and Rock im Park .

In November of the same year the band released a remix album based on American Tragedy under the title American Tragedy Redux . Andrew WK and KMFDM, among others, contributed to the remixes. In addition, a song was remixed by a fan that was selected through a competition. In addition to other touring activities, the group began work on the third studio album. Notes from the Underground was released in January 2013. Pre-works were released in October 2012. The album was released in a standard version and a so-called unabridged version with additional material. The group instantly reached number two on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Canadian album charts.

The fourth studio album, Day of the Dead , was released in March 2015. The band returned to the studio in late 2016 to record their fifth studio album, V , also known as Five . After the contract with Interscope was fulfilled, Hollywood Undead founded their own label Dove & Grenade Media in collaboration with BMG Music Publishing to release the album. The first single California Dreaming was released in mid-2017. V appeared in October. In 2018 the group released the standalone single Gotta Let Go . In the same year the EP Psalms was released and two years later the sixth album, New Empire, Vol. 1 .

style

The music of Hollywood Undead is considered a crossover style that is "more" to be assigned to Nu Metal than to genres like rap core . Reviews also refer to the music as “tailor-made Nu-Metal ready-made goods”. In reviews, for example, reference is made to Nu-Metal artists such as Linkin Park , Papa Roach , Crazy Town and Limp Bizkit . The style is particularly comparable to that of the Linkin Park group. In his review of the album New Empire Vol.1, which he wrote for Metal Hammer , Konstantin Michaely describes the group as a " chick version of Linkin Park". Jeanette Grönecke-Preuss sums up the music for Metal.de as “Linkin Park with Elektro-Gezucke ” . For Rock Hard, Thomas Kupfer discussed American Tragedy as the "light version of Linkin Park". Ronny Bittner also reviewed the album New Empire Vol.1 for Rock Hard . This "no longer looks like a light version of Linkin Park and Papa Roach, but like an inferior clone of the two bands."

The group present a "combination of rap, hip-hop and some not really hard guitars, but heavy popping grooves and sugar-sweet pop melodies".

“Also with their fourth album? Day Of The Dead ?? HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD only move on the edge of the metal or rock genre. The music of the Californian sextet is primarily dominated by hip-hop sounds, which are paired with semi-hard guitars, dance sounds and catchy, often poppy rhythms. The vocally varied singing (all band members sing) oscillates between hard rape and kitschy-sweet melodies, which one has to say has catchy tune potential. "
