Virgin Mobile is the brand name of several wireless carriers in the UK , Australia , Argentina , Ecuador , France , Brazil , India , Ireland , Canada , Colombia , Peru , Poland , South Africa , Saudi Arabia , Uruguay and the USA . These were each founded as a partnership between the Virgin Group and a large local network operator and operate as independent companies.
Market position and products
In the UK, Virgin Mobile UK is the country's fourth largest wireless operator, but does not operate its own network. It uses the infrastructure of T-Mobile UK , now known as EE Limited . Starting in 2021, the company will switch to Vodafone UK for five years. Virgin Mobile mainly offers prepaid tariffs in Great Britain and exclusively in the other countries . In the United States, prepaid cards were still unknown before the Virgin company entered the market.
The newly founded Virgin Mobile Latin America entered the market in several South and Central American countries in 2012 with its partner Tribe Mobile. In Chile , mobile communications services were offered in April 2012 and in Mexico in 2014. Colombia was added in April 2013, followed by Peru and Ecuador in July 2016 in mid-2017.
Ownership
Most of the Virgin Mobile companies were acquired after a relatively short period of time by a larger network operator in the respective country, mostly from the original partner company through whose networks the services were implemented. On July 4, 2006, the cable company NTL: Telewest took over all shares in Virgin Mobile UK. Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson received more than 10% of NTL Telewest via a share swap, which has since been renamed Virgin Media . In Australia, Virgin Mobile Australia was merged with a subsidiary of the network operator Optus in April 2006 . Virgin Mobile Canada has been part of Bell Canada since May 7, 2009, and Sprint Nextel has announced that it will acquire Virgin Mobile USA for $ 483 million in the fourth quarter of this year. Before the takeover, all buyers secured the rights to further long-term use of the brand name from the Virgin Group.
