action

Sara Thomas and Jonathan Trager meet for Christmas shopping in New York , where they both want to buy the same pair of gloves in Bloomingdale’s department store . Jon leaves the gloves to Sara and is invited by her for an iced coffee as thanks . Although both are in steady relationships, they spend the afternoon together and fall in love with each other. When they split up in the evening, Jon wants to see Sara again and offers her to exchange phone numbers and addresses.

But Sara refuses, because she wants to let fate decide whether to meet again: She lets Jon write his telephone number on a 5 dollar bill and uses this bill to buy a roll of peppermint. Sara in turn writes her number in a first edition of the book Love in the Times of Cholera and sells the book the next day in a second-hand bookshop. When both of them find these objects again, they know that they are meant for each other.

Ten years later, both Jon and Sara are close to their weddings. Jon wants to marry the beautiful and rich Halley, and Sara recently got engaged to musician Lars. When Jon receives the copy of the book with Sara's phone number as a wedding present from his future wife, he calls off the wedding. Sara goes to New York shortly before their wedding to look for Jon, finds the banknote with Jon's number and now looks for him in town as well. She eventually finds him on the roller skating rink where they skated when they first met that winter.

In the final scene, Jon and Sara can be seen toasting their wedding day with a glass of champagne in the shop where they first met years ago.

Reviews

The film was largely criticized for its plot, which is partly based on far-fetched coincidences:

"The plot risks bursting under the strain of its coincidences."

"The plot runs the risk of bursting under the strain of its coincidences."

- Roger Ebert : Roger Ebert's Movie Yearbook 2004 in the Google book search

Peter Bradshaw from the Guardian called the film a typical romantic comedy, which in this case suffers from the plot.

"The lightweight story is based on models from classic romantic comedy, benefits from charming actors and some comical situations, but does not make ends meet without repetitions and lengths."

Prism gave the rating "worth seeing":

“And again one of those love films whose outcome you can guess after a few minutes. So this is just another romantic fairy tale about intimate togetherness. The story babbles in places, but the strong actors ensure appealing emotions and ultimately good entertainment. "

Awards

Kate Beckinsale and Jeremy Piven were for the Film Awards Saturn Award nomination. The film was nominated for Best Comedy for the Young Artist Award .

Trivia

The $ 5 bill with Jon's name and phone number is shown three times in the film: on the evening when Jon labeled him, years later when Eve received the bill as change, and the next day when Sara used the bill on the plane to pay. The lettering varies slightly from scene to scene. This can be interpreted as a prop mistake - or as a detail that was not told in the film: To increase his chances of seeing each other again, Jon could have labeled and circulated another 5 dollar bills after the introductory evening.
