Mint Royale is a British big beat band from Manchester. It was founded in 1997 by the two musicians Neil Claxton and Chris Baker under the name The Mint Gun Club .

Band history

Claxton had previously been part of the Development Corporation , a duo that produced and remixed some publications by well-known British artists. Baker was part of the band Pure Silver . The two, who already knew each other from their time as music students, met again at a Christmas party and decided to start a joint project. Their first joint release was in 1998 with the 12 "single Eel , which immediately attracted so much attention that they had to change their original name for legal reasons. The record was released on Norman Cook's label Skint and the duo was also known as Fatboy Slim well-known musicians and DJs, also because they are musically very close to each other. They received plenty of remix orders, including for the British number 2 hit Tequila by Terrorvision .

This was followed by several other single releases such as Deadbeat and From Rusholme With Love (the latter included in the Vanilla Sky soundtrack ), which were praised by music critics as well as fellow musicians, and with On the Ropes in September 1999 the first album. With the single Don't Falter , on which Lauren Laverne contributed the vocals, they had their first hit parade in 2000 and reached number 15 on the UK charts. Appearances at Top of the Pops and the Glastonbury Festival followed. Mint Royale remixes were in demand and their music found use in television series and film soundtracks such as Vanilla Sky and Get Carter .

The second album Dancehall Places was released in September 2002 and produced the two top 40 singles Sexiest Man in Jamaica and Blue Song . This was followed by an extensive tour of Great Britain.

For 2004, the duo started on their third album. A request for music for a car commercial for Volkswagen also led to a cover version of Singin 'in the Rain , in which Gene Kelly's original is also sampled. But even before the album was finished, Chris Baker, who had neither the advertising story nor the many live performances and who no longer wanted to go along with the project, withdrew from the project. Neil Caxton then ran Mint Royale on his own.

The album was released in September 2005 under the title See You in the Morning . Welsh singer Duffy , who made her breakthrough three years later, had her first recording as a singer. Furthermore, Steven Wren, the rapper Class A and the singer Fola could be heard on the album, who then belonged to the band's regular cast. The single Singin 'in the Rain was the album's only successful song and peaked at number 20 in the UK.

Two and a half years later, her version of the dance classic hit the charts again. In the casting show Britain's Got Talent , street dancer George Sampson chose the title for the semifinals and his dance performance won over the audience so much that he went back to it in the final and won. The re-released single then surprisingly made it to number 1 in the UK singles chart in June 2008.
