concept

The St. Laurentius Church in Schönberg

Every year more than 30 concerts, exhibitions and special events attract thousands of visitors to the Schönberg St. Laurentius Church , which is ideal for concerts thanks to its acoustics. The regular concerts take place on Tuesdays at 8 p.m., and there are also special events. The program spans an arc from traditional church music to the border areas of jazz and experimental music. The spectrum of instrumentation ranges from solo flute or harp to symphonic ensembles and choirs. World premieres or European premieres determine the program as well as popular music.

The Schönberger Musiksommer sees itself as a podium for young artists and a forum for experimentation. This also addresses a public that cannot be reached with classical concerts. The family atmosphere and family-friendly admission pricing characterize the Schönberg Music Summer.

The major artists who worked as soloists at the Schönberger Musiksommer include Charlie Mariano , Nora Chastain, Matthias Eisenberg , Zoryana Kushpler, Hans-Günther Wauer , Miriam Sharoni, Gotthold Schwarz , Claus Bantzer , David Geringas , Efim Jourist , Markus Köhler, Siegfried Pank , Georg Christoph Biller and the Thomanerchor , Thilo von Westernhagen, Anna Vinnitskaya , Lauren Newton , Melanie Hirsch and Silke Aichhorn .

history

The Schönberger Musiksommer is the result of a long tradition of church music. It started in 1847 with the construction of the organ by St. Laurentius (Schönberg) . It is the largest organ of the Wismar master organ builder Friedrich Wilhelm Winzer (1811 to 1886) that is still preserved today . Concert programs have been preserved since 1847. In 1987 the renovation of the church began. The then cantor Martin Fehlandt began to organize the concerts that had been taking place in summer for years from the beginning of summer to the end of summer every fortnight. He named this concert series the Schönberger Musiksommer.

Christoph D. Minke (KMD), cantor in Schönberg since November 1990, introduced the Tuesday rhythm with the 5th music summer. With the St. Laurentius Choir, Minke performed the coronation mass of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1991 on the occasion of the completed renovation . Since then, the St. Laurentius Choir, soloists and orchestra have been performing a major work as an opening or closing concert every year.

In 2016, the 30th season of the Schönberg Music Summer took place with a particularly long playing time from June 11th to October 1st, 2016.
