David Geringas
David Geringas (born July 29, 1946 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian cellist and conductor living in Germany .
Life
Geringas studied cello from 1963 to 1973 at the Moscow Conservatory with Mstislav Rostropovich .
In 1976 he moved to Hamburg, where he was first solo cellist in the NDR Symphony Orchestra . A lively concert career followed, where he played with numerous renowned orchestras, such as the Berlin Philharmonic , all German radio symphony orchestras, the Bamberg Symphony , the London Philharmonic Orchestra , the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Tokyo NHK Symphony Orchestra .
His repertoire includes works from the baroque to contemporary pieces . Well-known contemporary composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina , Pēteris Vasks and Erkki-Sven Tüür have dedicated concerts to him. In July 2006, in Kronberg dedicated to him piece David's Song for Cello and String Quartet by Anatolijus Šenderovas premiered.
As a conductor, he is regularly represented on podiums at home and abroad. Since 2005 he has been Chief Guest Conductor of the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra Japan . In 2007 he made his debut with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and the China Philharmonic Orchestra and in 2009 with the Moscow Philharmonic.
Geringas taught at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater from 1977 to 1986 , was appointed professor for violoncello at the Lübeck University of Music in 1980 and taught in this position for nine years from 2000 to the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin . His students include Jens Peter Maintz , Gustav Rivinius , Claudia Schwarze , Troels Svane , Inga Raab , Boris Andrianov, Tatjana Vassilieva, Monika Leskovar, Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt , Jing Zhao, Sol Gabetta , Ramon Jaffé and Johannes Moser .
Since 2005 he has been giving regular summer master classes at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.
He is married to the pianist Tatjana Schatz. His son Alexander Geringas became known as a music producer , songwriter and actor .

- 1970: 1st prize and the gold medal in the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow
- 1999: Grand Duke Gediminas Order Vilnius for his commitment to Lithuanian music and its composers
- Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the 12 cello concertos by Luigi Boccherini
- Diapason d'or for his recording of the chamber music by Henri Dutilleux
- 1994 German Record Critics' Prize for his recording of Hans Pfitzner's cello concertos
- 2006: Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class
- 2013: ECHO Klassik chamber music recording of the year
