Erkki-Sven Tüür (born October 16, 1959 in Kärdla , Hiiumaa Island , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian composer .

Life

After starting out as an autodidact, Tüür first studied flute and percussion at the Tallinn Music School from 1976 to 1980 . From 1980 to 1984 he studied composition with Jaan Rääts at the Estonian Music Academy in Tallinn and privately with Lepo Sumera .

From 1979 to 1984 he was composer, flautist, keyboardist and singer of the chamber music rock ensemble In Spe , which he founded and which quickly became one of the most popular rock groups in Estonia.

From 1989 to 1992 he taught composition at the Estonian Academy of Music .

Tüür's most important works include Period , Action , Passion and Illusion . Tüür combines modern elements such as clusters, polyrhythmics, atonality and layers of sound with traditional elements such as diatonic, modality and triad harmonics, whereby a core factor is the reconciliation between musical worlds. In 2002 he composed “Magma”, a work for percussion and orchestra with echoes of rock music. He dedicated this composition to the Scottish drummer Evelyn Glennie .

Erkki-Sven Tüür is a co-founder of the festival for contemporary music Nyyd ( "Now" ).
