From 1979 to 1984 he was composer, flautist, keyboardist and singer of the chamber music rock ensemble In Spe , which he founded and which quickly became one of the most popular rock groups in Estonia.
From 1989 to 1992 he taught composition at the Estonian Academy of Music .
Tüür's most important works include Period , Action , Passion and Illusion . Tüür combines modern elements such as clusters, polyrhythmics, atonality and layers of sound with traditional elements such as diatonic, modality and triad harmonics, whereby a core factor is the reconciliation between musical worlds. In 2002 he composed “Magma”, a work for percussion and orchestra with echoes of rock music. He dedicated this composition to the Scottish drummer Evelyn Glennie .
Erkki-Sven Tüür is a co-founder of the festival for contemporary music Nyyd ( "Now" ).
