Josef Anton Riedl (pseudonym: Józef Mann;   born June 11, 1927 in Munich ; † March 25, 2016 in Murnau am Staffelsee ) was a German composer of new music .

Life

After studying at the Munich Music Academy and taking courses with Hermann Scherchen in Gravesano , Riedl, influenced by Carl Orff and Edgar Varèse , devoted himself as a composer to percussion.

In 1950 he co-founded the German section of Jeunesses Musicales . From 1952 he pioneered the use of concrete and electronic sounds in music. From 1959 until its dissolution in 1966, Riedl was head of the Siemens studio for electronic music . The series of events »New Music Munich / Sound Actions« initiated by Riedl in 1960 last took place in 2009.

As a teacher, Riedl influenced the work of today's well-known students such as Peter Michael Hamel , Michael Hirsch and Michael Lentz , for whose radio play Muttersterben (2001) he created music. Lentz still plays as a saxophonist in the Riedls ensemble.

In 2020, the Bavarian State Library in Munich received the musical and documentary estate of Josef Anton Riedl.
