Armin Koehler

Armin Köhler (born June 27, 1952 in Aue (Saxony) ; † November 15, 2014 in Baden-Baden ) was a German musicologist, festival director and radio editor.

Life

Armin Köhler studied music from 1970 to 1974 at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music in Dresden and from 1977 to 1980 musicology at the University of Leipzig . In the mid-1970s he worked as a solo trombonist at a theater. From 1980 he was an editor at the music publisher Edition Peters . From 1984 to 1992 he was teaching at the two universities where he had studied.

In the spring of 1988 he founded the magazine Positions together with Gisela Nauck . Contributions to new music in the VEB Edition Peters Leipzig as an alternative to the official publication culture of contemporary music that is common in the GDR.

In 1990 he became editor at the German television broadcasting company , 1992 editor-in-chief for new music at Südwestfunk ; He kept this position after the merger with Südwestrundfunk . In addition to the SWR's concert series with new music, he also designed the series Erlebte Geschichte , for which he conducted interviews with composers. From 1992 until his death after a serious illness, he was the artistic director of the Donaueschinger Musiktage . Under his aegis, almost four hundred compositions were premiered in Donaueschingen. In addition, under the term maD (music academy Donaueschingen), he divided the “Next Generation” workshop for art and music students as well as further training for teachers at schools and music schools (Musik aktuell - “Adventure New Music” and Donaueschinger Musiktage) into the Donaueschinger Musiktage program on. He opened the Donaueschinger Musiktage to new forms of art, presentation and perception. He was the idea generator and initiator of the festival congress "upgrade" (New Music Mediation, Donaueschingen, spring 2015 and 2017). In memory of his work, the square in front of the Donauhallen in Donaueschingen was dedicated to him in October 2015 (Armin-Köhler-Platz).
