The Donauhallen (until 1974 Stadthalle Donaueschingen) are a trade fair, congress and event center in Donaueschingen . The Danube Halls comprise a total of three halls and three seminar rooms with a total area of over 3000 square meters.

history

The first festival hall

In 1899, Donaueschingen bought a festival hall for the first time, which went into operation on the old festival hall square. After the great fire of August 5, 1908, it served as an emergency shelter for homeless families. All kinds of events took place here for 46 years before it was destroyed by Allied aerial bombs on February 22, 1945.

A provisional solution followed after the end of the war. From 1946, the city leased the Fürstlich Fürstenbergische Reithalle, built in 1823, in Sennhofstrasse and converted it into a city festival hall. A multi-purpose hall was built in 1951 at the current location of the Donauhallen for cattle and pig markets .

The second festival hall

During a concert, the provisional festival hall went up in flames on March 20, 1955. This fire disaster led to plans to move the festival hall back to the city center. The idea arose to convert the market hall, which was put into operation in 1951 at the location of today's Donauhallen, into a multi-purpose hall, today's Mozart Hall. In addition to being used for cattle markets, it should also be possible for club and other celebrations. As a replacement for the market hall, Hall B, today's Bartók Hall, was built in the summer of 1956.

The multi-purpose hall becomes a festival hall

At the end of the 1960s it became obvious that the multi-purpose hall no longer met the increased demands of the international music days . In February 1969, Mayor Robert Schrempp informed the local council that the Südwestfunk could not realize many of the planned performances in the old hall and that a renovation had to be discussed quickly. After some back and forth, the local council voted to upgrade the market hall to a festival hall, which was equivalent to a new building. Just in time for the music days, the new hall went into operation on October 18, 1970 without an opening ceremony. In the period after that, Danube Halls A and B were renovated and rebuilt several times. With an extension to Hall B, Hall C was newly created in 1970. Hall A, today's Mozart Hall, has been optimized, especially the sound system, as well as the acoustics and the stage technology. The foyer was also expanded. At the beginning of 1974 the town hall was renamed Donauhalle.

modernization

In 1999 there were first plans for a general renovation of the Danube Hall. After the architectural competition for the modernization had already been announced in 2002, the city's expansion plans in 2006 heated the minds of the citizens. A referendum was the result, but it failed. After countless council and committee meetings as well as adjustments to the drafts, Mayor Thorsten Frei broke ground on March 5, 2008 for the general renovation project, which was planned by the architecture firm Schaudt from Konstanz. On September 11th 2010 the Donauhallen were reopened. The architectural goal was to combine the two individual existing halls with the new Stravinsky Hall, a foyer landscape and the new seminar area to form a hall ensemble.
