Robyn Schulkowsky
Robyn Schulkowsky (* 1953 in Eureka / South Dakota ) is an American percussionist and composer .
Career
Schulkowsky studied drums at the University of Iowa and the University of New Mexico , Albuquerque , and was the solo drummer of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in Santa Fe from 1977 to 1980 . She was also a member of the Orchestra of Santa Fe and taught at the University of New Mexico. In 1980 she came to Cologne for postgraduate studies with Christoph Caskel .
She has lived in Europe since then. Already in the early 1980s she appeared in world premieres of works by Karlheinz Stockhausen , Mauricio Kagel and Walter Zimmermann . She worked with representatives of new music such as John Cage , Kevin Volans ( Mbira ), Morton Feldman , Iannis Xenakis , Christian Wolff and Heinz Holliger , and toured all over Europe, the USA, Japan , Korea , the states of the former Soviet Union and West Africa . At the Salzburg Festival in 1993 she performed the piece Con Luigi Dallapiccola by Luigi Nono (on CD by col legno). Most recently she has performed compositions by Rebecca Saunders , Tigran Mansurjan and Wolfgang Rihm and has recorded works by Luciano Berio with Kim Kashkashian .
Schulkowsky also made a name for herself as an improviser, both solo and in the free jazz scene, particularly in collaboration with Lindsay Cooper , Derek Bailey and with the Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær . In Ghana she performed with the drummer Kofi Ghanaba . Since 2002 she has given concerts in Montevideo , Buenos Aires and Salvador da Bahia, among others , and taught there with Fredy Studer and Joey Baron .
In 2007 she founded the Drums Summit Festival with Stephan Andreae in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany , which was continued in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013.
As a composer, she mainly wrote works for theater productions and films (such as Emporte-moi - Take me with you ) as well as for solo percussionists and percussion ensembles.
One of Schulkowsky's main interests is the constant experimental research into new dimensions of sound, which she also combines with the development of unusual instruments. For the Expo 2000 in Hanover , she organized a twenty-four-hour drum concert with musicians from all over the world.
