Kim Kashkashian (born August 31, 1952 in Detroit ) is an American violist of Armenian descent.

Life

Kashkashian studied at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore with Walter Trampler and Karen Tuttle . After her first competition successes, she embarked on an international career as a soloist, made guest appearances at important festivals, made numerous recordings and is therefore now a sought-after chamber music partner - on the other hand, she has repeatedly taught at universities herself. In 1989 she moved from the University of Indiana in Bloomington to the Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg im Breisgau before accepting a professorship at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin in 1996 . In the summer of 2000 she accepted a call from the New England Conservatory of Music and returned to the USA.

In addition to relevant pieces by composers such as Bach , Brahms and Schumann , she has preferred to record more recent compositions, including works by Paul Hindemith , Béla Bartók , Benjamin Britten and Krzysztof Penderecki . Her cooperation with contemporary composers resulted in some first recordings that helped expand the relatively small viola repertoire. In search of new forms, she also crosses the boundaries of classical music in the narrower sense and works on productions that are more likely to be assigned to the fields of folklore , jazz or world music . An example of this is her participation in the album In Praise of Dreams by the Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek in 2004. There were also joint publications with the pianists Robert Levin and Keith Jarrett , as well as the percussionist Robyn Schulkowsky .

Most of Kim Kashkashian's publications have been on ECM since 1986
