Lepo Sumera

Lepo Sumera (born May 8, 1950 in Tallinn ; † June 2, 2000 ibid) was an Estonian composer and politician . From 1988 to 1992 he was the Estonian Minister of Culture.

Life

Lepo Sumera has been interested in music since childhood. From 1957 to 1964 he learned the accordion at the Tallinn Music School before moving to the Tallinn Music High School from 1964 to 1968. He studied at the Estonian Music Academy in Tallinn. His teachers Veljo Tormis and, from 1968, Heino Eller in particular have shaped him. After Eller's death, he continued his studies with Heino Jürisalu , which he completed in 1973. From 1979 to 1982 he took part in a postgraduate program at the Moscow Conservatory under Roman Ledenjow . From 1978 until his death he taught composition at the Estonian Academy of Music.

Lepo Sumera was married to the pianist Kersti Einasto. The couple had two daughters and one son together.

Sumera was a pioneer of electro-acoustic music and computer music . He has also composed six symphonies and numerous works for chamber music. He also became internationally known for his film music, which shows a special empathy for mood images. In Estonia he is also known for his choral compositions. The Seenekantaat - Mushroom cantata (1978/83), whose text consists of Latin names for mushrooms, is of particular importance .
