Claus Bantzer (born October 10, 1942 in Marburg ) is a German church musician , composer and conductor .

life and work

Claus Bantzer was born in Marburg in 1942 into a family of artists (both father and grandfather Carl Bantzer were painters ). His older brother Christoph Bantzer is a film actor.

Bantzer began studying piano, organ and conducting at the University of Music in Frankfurt am Main. He continued his studies at the University of Music in Hamburg, where he became an organ student of Heinz Wunderlich . At the same time he was his assistant at St. Jacobi .

From 1975 Bantzer was organist, later church music director at St. Johannis Harvestehude in Hamburg, where he a. a. directed the church choir of St. Johannis. In 1980 he founded the Harvestehude Chamber Choir , which he also directed. Bantzer has worked as a conductor with the Hamburger Camerata since 1986 .

In 1999, he started the music series Kreuzungen - Musik interwoven , in which he combined various art forms (dance, painting, literature or film) with his own improvisations . The choreographer John Neumeier and the writer Hamid Skif were involved in the series. He also involved jazz musicians such as Leszek Zadlo and Warnfried Altmann , with whom he also made recordings.

As a composer of film music, Bantzer worked particularly intensively with the directors Peter Lilienthal , Doris Dörrie , Jan Schütte and Tevfik Başer .

In 2008 Bantzer retired from church service and handed over the leadership of the church choir to his successor in office. He directed the Harvestehude Chamber Choir until 2017.
