Warnfried Altmann (born May 15, 1958 in Leipzig ) is a German saxophonist , jazz musician and composer .

Life

The old man, who grew up in Magdeburg , learned to play the violin as a child. After studying saxophone at the Dresden University of Music , he played in big bands before turning to improvised and chamber music jazz . He played with musicians such as Hans-Günther Wauer , Hermann Naehring , Günter "Baby" Sommer , Claus Bantzer , Xu Feng Xia , Willi Kellers and Albrecht Riermeier . In reading concerts with authors such as Ludwig Schumann or Friedrich Schorlemmer , he improvises music to accompany the texts. Warnfried Altmann had a teaching position for saxophone and improvisation at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg .

Altmann has lived in Wangelin, Mecklenburg, near Lake Plauer since 2010 .

Jazz in the chamber

Warnfried Altmann has been organizing the Jazz in der Kammer concert series since 1990, initially at the Magdeburg Theater . This series was named on the one hand after the former name of the theater, Kammerspiele ; on the other hand, it is reminiscent of the Berlin concert series of the same name, Jazz in the Chamber. In 2016, the Magdeburg Theater ended the contract with Jazz in the Chamber. Since September 2016 the jazz series has been continued under the previous name in the Forum Gestaltung Magdeburg .

The "Jazz in the Chamber" series already existed in the 1970s. Back then mainly free jazz was played. Warnfried Altmann was present at all concerts as a listener and aspiring musician. In a concert by Günter Sommer and Hans-Karsten Räcke, among other things, a symphony for tape and garden hose was intoned and speeches by Walter Ulbricht and Erich Honecker were played on tape. Günter Sommer's comments about a tube that was prepared with a mouthpiece and funnel were taken as provocation. This and other concerts were the reason to ban the series.

In the summer of 1990, Wolf Bunge , the artistic director of the then Freie Kammerspiele , had the idea of ​​doing something special every Monday in the chamber and allowing the actors a day of rest. Since then, jazz has been taking place in the chamber with ten concerts a year. Since then, mainly younger jazz musicians and bands have performed regularly at these concerts. In the Kammerspiele there was also the first musical encounter between the brothers Johannes Bauer and Conny Bauer on the trombone and Matthias Bauer on the double bass. In the fall of 2010, the 200th concert in this series took place.

Three-country quartet

In the poetry performance I burn and I will always burn , which deals thematically through language and music with the poetry book of the same name by the writer and dissident Elisabeth Graul from the time of her political imprisonment in the GDR, are based on the type of musical design behind the Word hidden dimensions of trapped people audible.
