Christoph Winckel (born December 22, 1950 in Zeitz ) is a German bassist of creative jazz and free improvisation music . He is considered "one of the most experimental and original musicians" of the younger generation in jazz and improvised music of the GDR ( Bert Noglik ).

Live and act

Winckel studied double bass in Leipzig. From 1973 he was a member of Manfred Schulze's ensemble , then in the Joe Sachse Quartet, from which the group Osiris emerged with Hannes Zerbe , which went on tour with Leo Wright and Charlie Mariano . In 1979 Andy Altenfelder brought him into his quintet, from which an improvisation trio with Johannes Bauer and Heiner Reinhardt developed.

In the eighties Winckel stepped up with his own experimental projects - Fine with the dancer Fine Kwiatkowski, the string quartet 18 Draht and the linguistically oriented group Atropa bella donna with the poet Tohm di Roes. During this time Winckel worked repeatedly with the musicians Dietmar Diesner , Heiner Reinhardt, Lothar Fiedler, Peter Koch and Hansi Noack, gave concerts with Tony Oxley , Radu Malfatti , John Tchicai , Phil Minton , Sven-Åke Johansson , Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky and Walter Malli .

With Willi Kellers , Alan Tomlinson , Alan Wilkinson and Alex Maguire , Winckel formed the band Tommys & Krauts . In Switzerland there were projects around musicians like Urs Blöchlinger and Werner Lüdi .

Christoph Winckel has worked in the Ruf der Heimat quartet with Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky and Peter Brötzmann , Thomas Borgmann and Willi Kellers since the 1990s . He went on tour with the Charles Gayle Trio and with Peter Kowald , was a member of the group OT of the painter AR Penck , played in bands by Sibylle Pomorin and Chris Cutler .

Theater music for the director Dimiter Gotscheff (with Peter Brötzmann and Willi Kellers), works with the three-country quartet , which included texts by Elisabeth Graul, and world premieres of Helmut Zapf and Georg Katzer compositions led to neighboring artistic fields . Tours have taken him through Europe, Russia and the USA.

Christoph Winckel has played in the Alan Tomlinson Trio and the Manfred Hering Trio since 2000. Above all, he performs with Ruf der Heimat and the group Machol, which he founded, and as a solo musician. In 2017 his WOOD-ACTION! Stage piece for 9 double bass players premiered in Berlin. He is co-founder of the bands SECHSACHSER and ÄLLÄGDROH-SCHRODD (2019).

Three-country quartet

In the poetry performance I burn and I will always burn , which deals thematically through language and music with the poetry book of the same name by the writer and dissident Elisabeth Graul from the time of her political imprisonment in the GDR, are based on the type of musical design behind the Word hidden dimensions of trapped people audible.
